  1. Cool but sunny. Temp currently 11C. The chilly NW breeze has dropped considerably during the morning. Fine weather for planting out parsnips and pottering in the garden this afternoon.
  2. Wall-to-wall sunshine today, albeit slightly hazy, but still there is a nagging, chilly SW breeze. It felt baltic at the Angus coast this morning. Fulmar at Auchmithie relaxing in the sun.
  3. A wasp's nest in one's living quarters may be intolerable, but:- http://www.rspb.org.uk/our-work/rspb-news/news/286461-what-use-a and Tony Juniper, in his excellent book What Nature Does for Britain, calculates that the services of pollinating insects are worth £400 million a year. It’s really high time we started loving the bloody things. Few people even study them. Their stings mean wasps are among the most under-researched of insects. https://www.spectator.co.uk/2016/07/why-all-civilised-people-should-love-wasps/
  4. It felt warm-ish today. Mid afternoon in the sun, the temp rose to 15C, although it felt much cooler in the shade. Nice cloudscapes this evening.
  5. Stopped off at SWT Balgavies this afternoon but stayed for longer than expected The three folk in the hide had drifted away around 4pm, but while I was watching the antics of this little fella: I was delighted and surprised around 4.40 to catch the return of, probably, one of the regular Osprey breeding pair here.
  6. http://geomag.bgs.ac.uk/data_service/space_weather/Global_activity_now.html Aurora alert issued.
  7. A beautiful day in the Borders.. Had to go to Melrose, today, and the car therm. topped at 18C . at about 2pm.
  8. These are probably a domestic mallard cross, but they are quite beautiful birds (imho) and definitely have spring on their mind.
  9. Not sure whether or not parakeets are welcome in the IK. But I loved watching them in Roses, in Spain - they're treated as a bit of a pest there too A pic from an old flickr account of mine Monk Parakeet Chicks | Ciel4682 | Flickr.webarchive I don't know if this pic will upload.
  10. Yes. I came across this link after viewing your post, but maybe you have too. Interesting though:- http://www.cornwall-birding.co.uk/tag/cattle-egrets-in-cornwall/
  11. Great photos, knocker. I guess it's an egret - but what kind?
  12. Grey skies, misty, temp 10C with a gentle breeze from the SW and a spit in the air. I had a quick word with one or two of the daffodil pickers this morning - quick because the dog sniffed out a rucksack lying in the field, containing someone's lunch. A fair number of local Scots, judging from accents, are working alongside seasonal migrants.
  13. Siskins have been regular visitors to the feeders during the winter months. This one turned up with a female today. Their breeding season starts mid-March and so I suppose they will be away in a week or two.
  14. Woodpeckers have been absent from the garden over the winter, but come spring they appear to be back. I have heard the "drumming" for a few weeks now. This one is a bit soggy, given the weather up here...... ( pic taken through glass and rain )
  15. I noticed a group of these gulls in deepest Aberdeenshire yesterday. They appeared not to have started their moult yet. I wonder whether that's due to shorter day-length or colder temperatures?

    Corgarff Castle

    From the album: ciel's pics

During the Jacobite Rising of 1715 Corgarff Castle was used as a rendezvous point towards the end of August by the Earl of Mar while marching from his ancestral home of Kildrummy Castle to Braemar Castle, where the Royal Standard was raised on the 6th of September. Following the Jacobites’ defeat, Corgarff was forfeited and the Government returned it to the Forbes family. Thirty one years later Corgarff Castle featured in the second Jacobite Rising when it was used as a weapons store by the Jacobites. On the 2nd of March 1746 the castle was raided by Government troops and the weapons and ammunition destroyed or taken away. After the Battle of Culloden the castle was bought from the Forbes of Skellater by the Government and used as an outpost of Braemar Castle. In 1748 it underwent numerous architectural changes to make it ready for its new life as a Government garrison. - See more at: http://www.stravaiging.com/history/castle/corgarff-castle#sthash.Z5uYjpDa.dpuf
  17. I suppose getting good photos of difficult subjects requires some ability in field craft.
  18. Some charming pics, knocker. The final one, the squirrel, is my favourite
  19. Cairn o' Mount snow gates closed. http://www.webcams.travel/webcam/fullscreen/1401952091
  20. Continuous, heavy wet snow falling here - the sort that crumples and slips down car windscreens and just catches on grass. Untreated roads could be quite treacherous though.
  21. For info, which is a pity. The webcast appears to be incompatible with mac OS.X - the sound is completely distorted. The powerpoint summaries are readable and informative , though.
  22. Dunbar harbour held a nice surprise - a raft of Eiders sheltering from the stiff breeze out at sea. The drakes were looking quite fine in their black and white plumage.
