  1. 4 hours ago, I remember Atlantic 252 said:

Not been bad Dec so far here, 5 dry days out of 5, (although rain Thurs evening), would expect Dec to be wet all the time

suppose the south will have to pay for this, will turn wet mid month, floods for Xmas (South), wouldn't bet against it

That surprises me, I'm not a million miles away from you and have seen quite a bit of rain, Thursday night, in particular, was horrendous - heavy rain and very strong winds. A bit of rain this morning, but the wind being more of a feature today.

It seems the boundary between wet and dry has been pretty consistent and stark since the start of November, with NW England and Wales up half way up Western Scotland bearing the brunt, with locations above and below that line being relatively dry, yet still very dull.

  2. I've not really been paying attention to the weather nation-wide, but was under the impression the whole country has been wet - wrong! Much of the Midlands, South and Northern half of Scotland have been at/below average for rainfall. I'm amazed by that, considering how wet it has been for us. Looks like N England, S Scotland and Wales have copped the worst of it all.

I've never had SAD before, but this disgusting November has genuinely p****d me off big time.

  3. I, too, would be very surprised if some rainfall records haven't fallen this November. We have been hammered round here, yet no real mention of it on the news. Also very surprised to see Reading at around 50mm and below average, we probably had more than that here today alone.

Good riddence to a vile month, hoping December offers a bit more in the way of sunshine and dryness...but not holding my breath.

  4. Heavy continuous rain through the morning and up until mid-afternoon here, reservoirs are at capacity and there's some flooding in areas. Another day of the same and there'd be serious issues no doubt.

It's just downright diabolical. The rain has been absolutely relentless seemingly throughout the whole of November. I'm thinking the south must be relatively dry, because this weather is surely newsworthy? I'm intrigued to find out the rainfall and sunshine figures for the month for the UK and our region.

  5. Absolutely horrendous again. Swear-worthy weather today and in truth over most of November. Knew it was coming after that dry October.

The weather can't change soon enough for me, and I honestly don't care about temperatures, mild or cold is fine, I just want to see the back of this b*****d rain. Give us a few days off, please.

    Rant over.

  6. Certainly wouldn't say no to that, I know it's not your favourite weather Scott, but would make a change from our usual wind and rain

I never thought I'd say it but I agree. Already sick of all this sodden rain!

  7. For me two winter events that will stand out above all others

Winter 1981/82 7 weeks of minus 20 degrees of frost at night, it was very mild upto around christmas

then a snow storm, after that into the freezer, got down to around minus 27 some nights spent time

living next to an aga cooker and a coal fire, no central heating then, that was at the height of a good

sunspot cycle, maybe the boffins could explain that.

Fast forward to 26th dec 1998, the boxing day storm, there has been some vicious wind events here

over the years but this one is firmly in the number 1 slot, it makes todays wind event a breeze in

comparison, i think it was called hurricane stephen, 100mph gusts around here, worse further north,

looked out at one point and things flying around, a tin sheet flew across the yard and impaled itself in

another roof, if youve seen the film twister you will get the idea, never want to witness the like again.

81/82 Mild until Christmas? It was one of the coldest Decembers on record wasn't it, with it being particularly severe mid month.

  8. Anyone know of any weather events/records that share your birthday? This thread has made me look into it - both the 1993 "storm of the century" blizzard and great blizzard of 1888 formed on my birthday. Also, the deepest snow ever recorded was measured in Tamarack, California...11.5 Metres!

More recently in the UK, 11/03/2013 was the coldest March day since 1986.

  9. It's kind of shame that this lovely mild November is going to be ruined by rubbish cold this weekend, though it was a bit foolish of me to expect it to stay that mild, to be honest.

Yeah, it's like expecting 30C+ maxima every day of July. Anyway, I for one can't wait for the "lovely" rain and cloud to do one and the "rubbish" sunshine to accompany the cold. :)

  10. Anyone else get ever so slightly annoyed when BBC weather reporters refer to maxima as if it's the average temperature?

"The temperature so far this November has been around 15C".

Actually, it hasn't. The average is around 4C colder than that.

Anyone else think it promotes ignorance, in a way?

    Or is it just me?

  11. Just looking at the CET monthly data, it seems as if many of the mildest Novembers (i.e., 8.0C+) have come in pairs, or pairs with a year's gap.

    1729: 8.1C

    1730: 9.2C

    1817: 9.1C

    1818: 9.5C

    1821: 8.6C

    1822: 8.2C

    1938: 9.4C

    1939: 8.7C

    1951: 8.5C

    1953: 8.5C

    1982: 8.0C

    1984: 8.0C

    2002: 8.5C

    2003: 8.1C

    2009: 8.7C

    2011: 9.6C

    2014: 8.6C

    2015: ??

Good spot. To put it in to context, how many 8C+ Novembers has there been?

Just noticed your link. From what I can tell, there's been 28 Novembers at 8C or above. 2015 is almost certain to be 8C+, so that makes 18 out of 28 of them bunched up within 2/3 years.

  12. goodbye nice mild weather, its looking like a blast of something cold is going to hit us next weekend :( along with it sanity in the md thread! lol

Come on Mushy, it's been mild, but the weather has hardly been "nice", has it? I don't know about your location, but mine has seen copious amounts of rain and very little sunshine. All in all very miserable.

Whilst some looking for cold may associate anything mild with poor conditions (which obviously isn't always true) the inverse is often seen from those looking for mild when talking about the cold.

You, like me, work outdoors, right? Surely you'd occasionally take a cool/cold dry spell over a mild and wet one? I would every time, but my preferences are obviously different.

Anyway, some kind of change is looking more certain, with potentially much colder conditions from the weekend onwards. To what extent and how long it lasts is up for debate.

Truth be told, I'd take anything drier with a bit of sunshine.

  13. Wow, a min of 17C according to weatheronline on Tuesday.. we don't even get lows that high every year in July or August.

    SyiDuUp.png

There's very mild, and then there's just ridiculous - those kind of minima in November are the latter. With that being said, I don't think that will come off.

What's with this seemingly unprecedented level of mildness?

  14. No, actually my blinds are up all day and I love going outside when it is dark, or when the cloudcover is so thick that it feels like the Sun hasn't actually risen properly. I love playing football in the depths of Winter, when it is dark, wet, and freezing, or going for a walk when the wind is blowing in your face under a thick sheet of fast-moving clouds. So I think I do get outside enough. There is nothing antisocial going on here :)

Light isn't bad for me at all. I enjoy the extremes (I like the days around the Summer solstice), but I enjoy the darker days far more. I think you just assume that everyone who likes the dark is a recluse who can't stand going outside.

True. I've always found that link (dark preference = antisocial) tenuous. How does the dark prevent someone socialising/being social?
