  1. I notice the MetO haven't updated their warnings today (they are very late doing so) and yesterday's warning referred to considerable uncertainty on the intensity - it will be interesting to see what today's warning says.
  2. Think you might have started an Internet rumour there... Tbh that hadn't occurred to me - as the Army and various charities now seem to be heavily involved in helping out with supplies in flooded areas I think I'd be happy leaving it to them (she says, trying to dispel rumour)...
  3. JP - are 'yemps' Yamkin temps? Seriously - I really appreciate the fact that you have abandoned your own plans to help all of us in this forum - personally I rely on you to interpret the charts, as do many others I know, and in present circumstances your efforts are specially heroic!
  4. Think it might be a male thing rather than a youth thing as my 48-yr-old husband sleeps through whatever is going on too - I'm sometimes convinced he thinks I'm making it up when I tell him the storms kept me awake again...
  5. Wind showing little sign of dying down yet - at least it isn't raining (at this moment). Have a good day, everyone, and make the most of the relative respite before the next lot hits us...
  6. In Tunbridge Wells it isn't raining - what a pity So am I breaking the rules if I post this ditty? I'm expecting a storm but I don't want to boast Don't want to annoy a Netweather Forum host Just for now I'm going to take my time Don't want to commit another weather crime... (Would like to point out that I have never been told off in any way by any Forum hosts who are all lovely people!)
  7. BB54, I'd give that post multiple likes if I could! Another thing occurred to me, when reading the posts (not thankfully on this forum!) of some saying the people who choose to live in flood-prone areas are somehow to blame for their fate: actually, we should be really proud that we have been able to claim land from the sea, and make a living from it, for so long. It's a real tribute to human ingenuity. It's just tragic that years of short-sighted government have put that in jeopardy.
  8. Surrey, you're good with charts, do you think this is going to be a worse storm than Wednesday's - to my untrained eye it looks a bigger beast?
  9. I hate that they do this just to sell newspapers - but on the other hand, for a lot of people, the implications of this winter's storms, both short-term and long-term, are worse than '87.
  10. Looking on the radar there seems to be worse to come quite soon... Oh, and just wanted to say (I've mentioned radar, so think I'll get away with it), what a lovely forum this is. People sharing all sorts of things - I must confess over the last few days I've been quite emotional (in a good way!) over some posts - there are clearly some wonderful people out there. I think Abruzzi Spur should write a novel about all of you - he certainly has a way with words!
  11. As I thought, being out in that was considerably less 'atmospheric' than watching it develop from the comfort of the living room... it's going to be quite an evening, I think.
  12. In the last ten minutes it has become very dark - the rain has slowed to a steady drizzle but there is clearly something on its way... Wind getting up a bit too. I know I shouldn't admit to finding pre-storm moments such as these exciting, in view of what some are going through - but it really is a very atmospheric scene out there. Bet I won't be saying that in half an hour when I go to collect the kids though...
  13. Bad news from Tamara over in the MOD thread - makes grim reading, but I'm sure she's right - she's been right all winter. Even worse news for those in the SW...
  14. Not sure I've been really enjoying it as such - but I do agree that it's been an uniquely interesting winter (for those of us lucky enough to watch from the sidelines) - it has had a horrible fascination to it, bit like driving past a car crash on the opposite carriageway.... in terms of understanding how the weather works it's certainly been an education.
  15. Well, the fencers surely picked a good day to turn up and try to replace the panels blown down before Christmas... have to admire their optimism... They've finally admitted defeat and gone home! I did try to break it to them gently that there were now four amber Met Office warnings out - don't think I'll see them before next week somehow - by which time, who knows, I may be able to put even more work their way...
  16. That was quite something for about five minutes - thought the windows were going to blow in! Scared the cats half to death (and me, to be honest).
  17. The foxes are going completely mad here tonight - is that a sign of anything? - (Please don't anyone refer me to that awful song...)
  18. That is my dream: to see the Northern Lights, stay in an Ice Hotel and have a midnight sleigh ride drawn by Huskies... I'd quite like to meet Santa as well but that might be too much to ask for...
  19. I always take a look in the Strat thread as well as the MAD thread as I find there's a much calmer, more considered approach and people only post if they really know what they're talking about! The news there seems to be fairly promising - even if we don't get lucky this time round, hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer before we get what most of us want (I'm not saying the word, as I'll jinx it!)
  20. Yes, it does feel a bit sombre here in the South East - but Merry Christmas everyone, and look out for your neighbours...
  21. Yes, really hoping everyone is OK - what a rotten Christmas some people are going to have. Puts everything into perspective really!
  22. This wind is really something - an enormous gust just now which made my daughter scream out loud! And we are well inland! What on earth is it going to be like tonight? I think a few festive beverages may be in order to give me Dutch courage (I'm not very keen on wind either...) And I'm so thrilled that I picked this afternoon to take the kids to the pantomime. Please everyone, take care - this is clearly going to be a storm to remember.
