  1. Indeed. Plus they are trained professionals whereas most of us are just enthusiastic amateurs so I'm sure their interpretation of the models is better than ours. The models are nice to look at sometimes and can give you a glimpse of possible futures but unless the met office mention it it's not very likely IMHO. They do get things wrong on occasions but generally I think are pretty good.
  2. Just glanced at the MOD thread. Wish I hadn't . Talk of big downgrades to cold prospects and the ensembles moving away from cold. I left quickly... That would be typical though, just as the met office outlook starts mentioning the chance of cold and snow next week the models move away from it. Be interesting to see if the outlook changes again today.
  3. Still sounds like mostly rain for us up to and including the weekend with the best chance for any snow tomorrow afternoon. Not sure it will amount to much but the chance is there. This is from the east of England overnight met office update so I'm not sure how far south the risk extends.
  4. Thanks for posting those videos, great viewing but boy does it make me feel old. 34 years ago but seems like only yesterday. Great memories of 1987, 30cm of snow and -7 max temps and that was on the North East outskirts of London. Only time I remember having any time off school due to snow. In February 1991 I was at university in Swansea. I remember it being absolutely freezing and we did have about 10cms of snow. I knew there would be more at home so I decided to go back at the weekend. It was a long train journey from South Wales, through London and out to the eastern burbs. Don't remember there being too many problems except on the last part of the journey where they were running a shuttle service between Barking and Upminster. It was a magical mile walk home from the station that Friday evening and well worth the trip. Great to see my parents, obviously, but the snow was the best bit. They knew I was a weather geek so I think they understood that the snow was the main attraction. Although the February 1991 spell had slightly higher tempertures, -5 max on the coldest days as opposed to -7, there was more snow at my location, 34cms. Also towards the end of the spell there was another snowfall of about 10cms, which only affected the South East, I think, due to the cold air hanging on there. Great memories.
  5. Maximum temperature was 8.3 at 415 this morning, highest temp since boxing day. Fell steadily all day and now -0.2 with a good frost already.
  6. The East of England one for here is slightly better... "Thursday cloudy and damp, becoming colder again to perhaps give some snow later. Friday drier but cold, with a risk of freezing fog. Further rain and perhaps some sleet Saturday." Difference in temperature on Wednesday is quite something though. A Max of only 3 for the East of England but 11 in the South East! Still only good for rain with maybe a bit of sleet thrown in for here though. Sounds awful...
  7. The updated outlook for 17th to 26th sounds more encouraging but I really don't like the last line. "...but a chance of near or slightly above average in association with any rain across the south" They are talking about temperatures btw.
  8. Yeah, cold but not quite cold enough. Maybe more of a chance of something a bit more wintery after about the 20th, as Paul suggests.
  9. That's exactly what the met office are expecting. Rain tomorrow, Thursday and Saturday and highs of 5 on the latest text forecast. Yesterday they mentioned the possibility of it turning to sleet and snow but not today so I would say the odds of any snow for us over the next few days are very slim.
  10. Maybe they should give percentages of possible scenarios, like they seem to do in the States. Would be more useful than basically mentioning everything.
  11. Got down to -3.7 last night, coldest of the winter so far. Still -1.1 out side and only 10 inside, no sun today to help the lounge warm up. Staying under the duvet for as long as possible but might have to venture out for food soon
  12. Ha ha ha! Yes, reminds me of when I was growing up and my room was the only one without heating. Used to wake-up on some winters mornings and my window would be covered in ice on the inside! My parents relented in the end and got me an oil fired radiator. I tell my daughter this now and she looks at me as if I'm telling a story from the 1880's and not the 1980's!
  13. Wow! Don't know how you've managed it. Only been two days for us and we are basically living in one room. Exciting times for you moving to Scotland.
  14. I feel your pain. Our boiler packed up on Friday and no-one can come till Tuesday. The sunshine is helping today as it shines In to the lounge and we have a has fire. Test of the house is freezing through.
  15. Very cold again today. Temp still just below freezing after only getting to 0.2 yesterday. My wife was working this morning, she finished at midday and had to deice the car to drive home.
  16. Maybe I should have specified this is from the east of England forecast. Maybe prospects for next week are better further north particularly with altitude.
  17. Looks good but I don't think any of these snow charts have verified recently. The met office are certainly not having any of it. Rain and noticeably milder next week is their opinion. Until they change their tune I don't think it's worth getting carried away with what the models might be showing.
  18. Precipitation looks great out in the North Sea but seems to be disintigrating as soon as it hits the coast.
  19. There are no warnings for snow anywhere tonight so, obviously, the pros aren't seeing it amounting to anything.
  20. Where are you seeing temps of 9? Current forecast is for a high of 4 at your location for Saturday, might be some sunshine though.
  21. Yeah not a great update. All mention of snow has gone from Monday to Wednesday then probably dry Thursday and Friday when it gets a bit colder again. Just got to wait and see what happens, still time for things to change.
  22. So sorry to hear that, my thoughts are with you. I have rewritten this bit several times as I don't want to make a sad situation worse, but I hope my experience may help you in some way. My Mum died several years ago now and at the time I pretty much lost interest in everything including the weather. But everyday it does get a bit easier. Everyone deals with grief in there own way so whatever you are feeling is perfectly normal. You may get people trying to encourage you to go out and do this that and the other, not really possible at the moment in any case, but I would say only do things when you feel ready. My main bit of advice would be to find one person you are comfortable talking to and tell them how you are feeling and be honest. Also, in hind sight I should have kept going with a hobby, such as the weather, as a bit of a distraction. So hang in there things will improve slowly.
