  1. we're doing very well. in fact, if you look through the archives for this date- http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/gif_archive.html we're doing better than any of the last 5 years
  2. latest- yesterday- this date last year- thats a massive difference, especially the sea ice!! we're also well ahead of 2010!
  3. James Madden, from the above post, Quote- “Huge swirly low-pressure systems" he really knows his stuff doesn't he.........
  4. of course they can. thats what they do. if i rang them and said i was in the SAS and i implanted Madden's forecast into Diana's head, which made her brain explode, it would probably be headline news tomorrow actually, that would probably work on anyone........
  5. 10 day forecast is looking good for snow advance. steady decrease in temps from siberia, across eastern europe and into scandi. snowfall is also forecast for these areas. if this continues on track, we could match 2009 and 2010 Snow Advance Index, 10 days before the end of october! http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Russia?symbols=none&type=lapse http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Russia?symbols=none&type=prec
  6. i admire the enthusiasm on this thread for colder weather but calm down everyone. winter is coming, just not next week. lets get through autumn first, seeing as we're not even half way through it yet! patience grasshopper.....
  7. probably James Madden. it might cost you £9.99 to view his forecast. http://www.exactaweather.com/ but if you really want to see weather related fiction, 'The Day After Tomorrow' is only £2.94 on Amazon.......
  8. here you go steve- link to site for anyone who hasn't got it- http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/
  9. an early pre-winter foray into this thread for me. nothing changes. anyone found any nits yet?.....
  10. or from a 'mildies' point of view, that this is not the pre-cursor to an unprecedented winter, of epic proportions......
  11. for now maybe but as we progress through october it will get colder in eastern europe and scandi. http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Russia?symbols=none&type=lapse we could potentially match any previous year by as early as mid-month
  12. for future reference, here's previous years' snowcover by the end of october. i started at 2007 as that was the 'lowest sea ice' year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 but look where we are now- and its still only the 6th.......
  13. you know what? just this once, i would like James Madden's forecast to be right. obviously i would then have to assassinate him....
  14. there probably is. such as cohens theory of siberian snowcover. one thing can lead to another but it guarantees nothing. NWF doesn't really 'work' or it would never be wrong. it merely gives an estimate. the further out it goes, the less accurate it becomes. weather forecasting is like forecasting the 1000th word in chinese whispers!
  15. to be fair, neither has anyone else. amateurs, professionals and scientists alike, devote a large part of their time trying to find correlations in the weather. a few have found very vague, weak links, most have found none.
  16. just to put that one to bed..... m/maps/Russia?symbols=none&type=lapse negative double figures maybe....
  17. well i think all the weather during dec/jan/feb will be winter weather. thats because its weather and its winter now that's a 100% accurate forecast....
  18. oh.... dear..... oh..... dear..... i've only just read Madden's forecast, posted a few pages back.... oh.... dear..... i feel a rant coming on.... must stop myself..... the man really has surpassed himself this time!! i'm sure all of us coldies would love him to be right (by chance of course, not by his 'professional expertise'...) and if he keeps spouting 'forecasting' the same old sh**e every year then eventually he may well be. his usual forecasts are far fetched to say the least, this time though, he has basically taken all the coldest winters since '62/'63 and lumped them all together to 'forecast' the mother of all winters. pretty much, very heavy, disruptive snow, for the whole 3 months of winter!! -28c??? ice floes off the coast??? aaaaaaaagh!!!! ( don't rant.... don't rant.....)
  19. even if snowmageddon is forecast its still arguing over "if" "where" "when" and "how much" !
  20. you think this is bad? wait until you see the model thread in the depths of winter!!
