  1. You will normally see Newts floating on the surface on warm hot days, they can be spotted under water to depending on how clear your pond water is,  but very rarely do i see them out of water only the odd time, lovely creatures to see...

I've a few dew ponds in the fields round here, will check them for spawn this weekend.

  2. Think the charts will change somewhat. i do think we could see some pretty potent PM blasts giving heavy hail showers and hill snow.

Yes thats certainly what the GFS has been hinting at for the last few days, the second half of March could be cooler than most of Winter just gone, which wouldn't take much..

  3. The Polar Vortex remains a very strong feature to our NW and whilst it looks like relaxing its grip for a time by the end of the week and into next week allowing high pressure to build from the south - longer term, I would expect it to push the high back south again, ushering in further unsettled conditions but this will be the start of significant pattern change over the northern hemisphere as the PV lifts out of NE Canada and allows height rises to our north west. All very normal service for early Spring exposing us to a flow from the north.

This doesn't look or feel like a March 2012, which like March 2013 was an anomaly.

    Just my take on things.

In the short -medium term the charts make for very promising viewing for those wanting some decent spring like and importantly dry weather, which for many is much needed.

Could be a very topsy turvy spring this one though!

Yes Damian, GFS is showing a cooler much more Wintry N/N/W flow this morning out in FI, after a good spell of settled weather. Will be interesting if this pattern evolves over the coming days..

High Pressure is now sat just to the West of the UK next week, some lovely settled weather on the way..

  4. While the other place appears a good place to show the freak show that is denialism it really does not appear to be 'sceptical' of the human induced climate shift we are undergoing?

Maybe we do need a 'nutters' thread?

Don't go down the name calling route, it will just produce another rope for 'them' to swing off.

  5. BLUE AURORAS: Northern Lights are usually green, and sometimes red. Those are the colors produced by oxygen when it is excited by electrons raining down from space. On Feb. 22nd, Micha Bäuml of Straumfjord, Norway, witnessed an appariton of aurora-blue:

Energetic particles striking ionized molecular nitrogen (N2+) at very high altitudes produces a cold azure glow of the type captured in Micha's photo. Why it overwhelmed the usual hues of oxygen on Feb 22nd is unknown. Auroras still have the capacity to surprise.

Any auroras tonight, blue or otherwise, will be a bit of a surprise. Geomagnetic conditions are quiet. NOAA forecasters estimate a scant 5% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on March 3rd. http://www.spaceweather.com/

  6. The charts this morning are still showing a much more settled/warmer and dryer outlook after mid-week, it will feel very pleasant especially from the Midlands South. Goodbye Atlantic !
