  1. Well foggy at the coast, Bridlington Harbour at 7.15am. Not sure if the storms will get to the coast later, but I will watching radar. Update spotting with rain now 7.45
  2. Lunchtime brought clear blue cloudless skies and an ENE wind force 4-5. Quite a stiff breeze as a headwind for about 3 miles of my ride. But it's kept temps pegged back to 20c here, and on balance I would rather have wind than temperatures above 20c.
  3. The last measurable rain here at the coast was the begining of May. Very dry now everywhere, and we missed the May 11th storms by a few miles.
  4. Been in Malton today, and temperature difference between Malton and home was remarkable. I know car thermometers have some doubts as to accuracy, but it was the change that struck me. Once in the car and moving settled down from 32c to 27c leaving Malton, by the time I got home 19c. 8c difference in 30 odd miles. Not complaining, it was stifling in Malton, just glad I live at the coast. Bike ride later today
  5. Lunchtime produced light winds, E force 3, sunshine and temps of about 20c. Overall the breeze has kept temperatures in the acceptable range. There was some signs of instability but sky has now cleared. Overall quite pleasant. Hopefully the hot weather wont encroach any further.
  6. A definite change in the look of the weather today at the coast. Still a ground level vaugely easterly flow with cloud level flow looking more like S, but the cloudless skys of the last few days are replaced with more cloud, and signs of instability, with cumulus in evidence. The warmest day of the year so far here with temperatures already at 20c. We will see what lunchtime ride brings.
  7. Not really, the central area of London, out to the start of the green belt was mainly built up prior to WW2, Central London has more high rise now, but parks and open spaces haven't changed much, and large areas outside the centre e.g. like the area I was brought up in, Balham, haven't changed much in terms of overall development. There has been change but the proportion of built to open space is much the same. Looking back at data from the last 60 years what is clear is that although the average rise in temperature is maybe 1.5C what has changed far more is the potential maximum temperatures. In my life time the highest recorded temperature has increased by nearly 5c, every few years the record gets pushed a bit higher. I wonder if the cleaner atmosphere owing to restrictions on things like coal burning has made a difference as well. I do think that changes are going to be needed to the UK infrastructure, and these changes are probably going to be quite painful. Current emphasis on 'Energy efficency' is going to have to be replaced by something which considers keeping cool in hot weather, as well as warm in cold weather. Managing heat is also potentially more difficult. If you are cold you have options to add clothing etc, maybe you are not comfortable, but probably not life threatening, where as overheating is potentially deadly in a much shorter time frame.
  8. I am happy to wait. What I found more unsettling is that I grew up in London in the 1960s and we had several years when we never got to 30c. Now it's a case of days at a time if you live in the SE.
  9. Not going to speak too soon but so far I have not had to visit this thread. The last week has seen consistent easterly winds varying between NE and SE. That has meant that even over the last few days we have only seen 20-22c which is at the top end of our comfort zone but doesn't cause major whining, and its cooled down nicely at night. This is very different to last year's hot weather when we were in a SW airstream, which felt like dragons breath here. Only problem, we have a trip to London booked at the end of the month for my wife's birthday, but I think we may regret it. She is also a heat hater. Moving to the east coast was undoubtedly one of better decisions 20 years ago...
  10. Another cool grey day here, wind N force 4, temperature 12c, all over featureless grey cloud with a few damp spells with drizzle, enough to wet the ground but no more. Smelt a wood fire when cycling through the village so someone is feeling chilly
  11. I'd rather have this than last years 'dragons breath' weather. I hate heat. Last week was nice, sunny but northerly keeping temperatures down. Not a fan of the all over grey weather, but better than too hot for me. I can remember years growing up in the 60s and 70s when we never even got to 30c in London where I lived at the time with my parents. Last year was my worst nightmare, 29c at the coast... On a more serious note whilst the talk is of 1.5c warming I would estimate that maximum summer temperatures have risen by more like 4c over the last 50 odd years
  12. Hasn't broken up at the coast at all today, at one point it looked like it might but now it's back to that all over featureless grey.
  13. Cooler than yesterday, cloud has been persistent today, Lunchtime brought 13c and Force 3-4 NNE winds, with just a little brightness. The ground is now looking very dry as is the lawn. Will it be another of hosepipe bans?
  14. Third fine day in a row. winds have been mainly N and not at a level to cause annoyance on my daily bike ride. Temperatures pegged back by the onshore wind here. My wife was in York today and said it felt significantly warmer. At lunchtime we had 15c, N wind force 4, with very little cloud.
  15. A fine day after early mist. The one weekend when we could do with some wind, as its Bridlington kite festival. Guess what, so far very little although forecast to increase slightly through the day.
  16. Very pleasant lunchtime ride, wind force 2 N, temperature 14c. Hazy sunshine. This is the first week for many months where wind hasn't been an issue. Some very light rain first thing when I went for my 6am walk.
  17. Similar experience to @RebsAbbo on my lunchtime ride. Winds light Force 2-3 SE temperature 15c. Hazy sun with a veil of thin cloud. We did have a few spots of rain around 4.30 but it wasn't enough to wet the ground.
  18. Not too bad at lunchtime today, wind was NNW force 4-6, not the worst direction as I get quite a bit of shelter on my daily ride. Temperature around 12c. Very broken cloud with plenty of sunshine. This was after a wet and dull start to the day at 6am.
  19. Well what a change today, sea fret all the morning, lunchtime still misty, wind N force 5, temperatures 9c. Back to a coat and gloves. Wood box fill request received from Home Manager, which has been completed
  20. Yes strange day weather wise in our part of the world. I have been in Malton for work most of the day, had some heavy rain and a couple of flashes of lightning at about 3, coming home a bit later there had been some very heavy rain just to the south, with surface water floods on the road out to North Grimston. Heading towards the coast up the Wold Valley there was a clear line where the cloud and showers stopped with bright sun all day at home. Now sea fret has rolled in.
  21. Looks to have been some activity on Holderness between Hedon and Withernsea, but dry here as well Lunchtime produced SW force 3, 17c and quite a bit of cloud building. No onshore breeze today, so maybe showers will reach the coast.
  22. Lunchtime bike ride brought some interesting weather. Ground level winds are NE force 3, but clouds are moving generally W at about 15mph based on shadows on road, so I wonder if there will be a convergence zone. Temperatures much warmer at 16c, first 'no coat' ride day of the year. Looks like there is going to be some shower activity, some good 'cauliflower' clouds on my way out. Mainly sunny, all in all not a bad day. Looking much darker towards the west on my way back.
  23. Just been watching that area of storms west of Hull moving east on the radar. Was there some rotation in it? Any reports from anyone who was under it? It fizzing out now as it reaches the coast.
  24. Well no storms here, but certainly some heavy shower. Got absolutely soaked on lunchtime bike ride. Ground level winds were variable and almost non existant, but within 20 mins of leaving home a bit of brightness turned into this and about 10 mins later I was like a drowned rat. Warmer than yesterday at 13c. Now grey again.
  25. Well after a couple of quiet days wind is back again today at the coast. NE force 5-6 maybe gust close to 7 at lunchtime, with NE being the second worst direction for my normal bike ride after SW. Temperature 11c, partly cloudy, apart from the wind an OK day even if some people will find it a bit cold (doesn't worry me).
