Been in Malton today, and temperature difference between Malton and home was remarkable. I know car thermometers have some doubts as to accuracy, but it was the change that struck me. Once in the car and moving settled down from 32c to 27c leaving Malton, by the time I got home 19c. 8c difference in 30 odd miles. Not complaining, it was stifling in Malton, just glad I live at the coast. Bike ride later today

A definite change in the look of the weather today at the coast. Still a ground level vaugely easterly flow with cloud level flow looking more like S, but the cloudless skys of the last few days are replaced with more cloud, and signs of instability, with cumulus in evidence. The warmest day of the year so far here with temperatures already at 20c. We will see what lunchtime ride brings.

Not really, the central area of London, out to the start of the green belt was mainly built up prior to WW2, Central London has more high rise now, but parks and open spaces haven't changed much, and large areas outside the centre e.g. like the area I was brought up in, Balham, haven't changed much in terms of overall development. There has been change but the proportion of built to open space is much the same. Looking back at data from the last 60 years what is clear is that although the average rise in temperature is maybe 1.5C what has changed far more is the potential maximum temperatures. In my life time the highest recorded temperature has increased by nearly 5c, every few years the record gets pushed a bit higher. I wonder if the cleaner atmosphere owing to restrictions on things like coal burning has made a difference as well. I do think that changes are going to be needed to the UK infrastructure, and these changes are probably going to be quite painful. Current emphasis on 'Energy efficency' is going to have to be replaced by something which considers keeping cool in hot weather, as well as warm in cold weather. Managing heat is also potentially more difficult. If you are cold you have options to add clothing etc, maybe you are not comfortable, but probably not life threatening, where as overheating is potentially deadly in a much shorter time frame.

I am happy to wait. What I found more unsettling is that I grew up in London in the 1960s and we had several years when we never got to 30c. Now it's a case of days at a time if you live in the SE.

Not going to speak too soon but so far I have not had to visit this thread. The last week has seen consistent easterly winds varying between NE and SE. That has meant that even over the last few days we have only seen 20-22c which is at the top end of our comfort zone but doesn't cause major whining, and its cooled down nicely at night. This is very different to last year's hot weather when we were in a SW airstream, which felt like dragons breath here. Only problem, we have a trip to London booked at the end of the month for my wife's birthday, but I think we may regret it. She is also a heat hater. Moving to the east coast was undoubtedly one of better decisions 20 years ago...

I'd rather have this than last years 'dragons breath' weather. I hate heat. Last week was nice, sunny but northerly keeping temperatures down. Not a fan of the all over grey weather, but better than too hot for me. I can remember years growing up in the 60s and 70s when we never even got to 30c in London where I lived at the time with my parents. Last year was my worst nightmare, 29c at the coast... On a more serious note whilst the talk is of 1.5c warming I would estimate that maximum summer temperatures have risen by more like 4c over the last 50 odd years

Yes strange day weather wise in our part of the world. I have been in Malton for work most of the day, had some heavy rain and a couple of flashes of lightning at about 3, coming home a bit later there had been some very heavy rain just to the south, with surface water floods on the road out to North Grimston. Heading towards the coast up the Wold Valley there was a clear line where the cloud and showers stopped with bright sun all day at home. Now sea fret has rolled in.

Lunchtime bike ride brought some interesting weather. Ground level winds are NE force 3, but clouds are moving generally W at about 15mph based on shadows on road, so I wonder if there will be a convergence zone. Temperatures much warmer at 16c, first 'no coat' ride day of the year. Looks like there is going to be some shower activity, some good 'cauliflower' clouds on my way out. Mainly sunny, all in all not a bad day. Looking much darker towards the west on my way back.

Well no storms here, but certainly some heavy shower. Got absolutely soaked on lunchtime bike ride. Ground level winds were variable and almost non existant, but within 20 mins of leaving home a bit of brightness turned into this and about 10 mins later I was like a drowned rat. Warmer than yesterday at 13c. Now grey again.

Well after a couple of quiet days wind is back again today at the coast. NE force 5-6 maybe gust close to 7 at lunchtime, with NE being the second worst direction for my normal bike ride after SW. Temperature 11c, partly cloudy, apart from the wind an OK day even if some people will find it a bit cold (doesn't worry me).
