  1. How tall is that monument? I'd guess 30 foot. Obviously it's on an exposed hill (482 ft) so it's likely much more prone to lightning. I wonder how they test the lightning conductor?
  2. There's too many storms fighting for energy in one area, they're too shortlived because of the type of ingredients around today.
  3. Yeah good for watering the garden, too many competing showers for any organisation. This evening 5-6pm might be better, as the showers thin out.
  4. Another thunder day with the storm overhead. The storm came from the SSE moving slightly inland a bit of cyclonic steering. From my view the storm towards Needham Market was obscured by altocumulus, so not good for photos. 4mm of rain collected.
  5. I'm surprised it has made it inland, it's easing down now. But I have seen lightning earlier today, and tonight.
  6. The moon is being covered by cirrus, I've just seen a distant flash to my south. According to radar this would be around Tonbridge Wells. I'd say about 80 miles from here.
  7. Quite an active storm about an hour ago, thunder every 20 secs or so, typical single cell lasted about 20mins before stopping abruptly.
  8. I Wondered ware my camping sitting mat, and pocket radio (sferic detector) had gone. In the hurry to avoid an incoming downpour and lightning in early hours of Tuesday, + carry tripod and rucksack, I left them in a field ware I had been trying to photograph lightning. I just went back to the field only 4 miles away and there they were. The radio seems to be working despite about 10 mm of rain falling. It's the second time the radio has been left out in a field overnight. It was only £4 though.
  9. It's still going , maybe the Pyrenees or central massive have helped?
  10. You could of at least sat on the seat and had a picnic, and you would of had an amazing selfie.
  11. There's a white blob middle of east Anglia I was lucky with area last couple of days
  12. This is from 02.00 on Monday taken with my phone. There are aircraft for Stanstead/Luton avoiding the storms. Jupiter is at top of frame Last night I was out and noticed another car parked up watching lightning about 1am. There's some fantastic photos in this thread I haven't had any luck... 13. Hi SnowBear That sounds possible in certain conditions, I've read about "ducting" of sounds in inversions etc. The sound was in the West/NorthWest coming from inland. The surface wind was Northeast so maybe it was carrying sounds inland from the sea.
  14. Not sure wareabouts on the forum to add this. Early this morning 03.30 I was taking a few photos of Pleiades and Mars. It was mostly a clear sky with a light breeze (6mph) from the NE. I was 4 miles out of town. I heard 3or4 distant low frequency quite booms , lasting around 2 seconds each. Because the wind was light and it was quiet, I noticed these sounds they were like very distant thunder, that you feel as much as hear. Last week I was at the same location taking photos of a thunderstorm. I noticed that some of the distant thunder made the pheasents call out, I've noticed this on numerous occasions. The low booms I heard early hours of this morning also made the pheasents call out. I didn't see any lightning or flashes, there were no storms around this morning. The sounds seemed to come from the West/North West. Difficult to estimate a distance. I wondered if anyone else was out doing astrophotography and heard anything. Quote
  15. As it's only a couple of hundred yards to ware the Hummingbird Hawk moths are feeding. I had a look for them today and took some photos, there's at least two of them feeding, as I've seen them together on the same bush. I used my 90mm Macro, and a 55-300 zoom. I used a shutter speed of 1/1250 and 1/1600 F9 1250 ISO
  16. 2022 A good year for Hummingbird Hawkmoths https://www.birdguides.com/news/bumper-year-for-uk-hummingbird-sightings/#:~:text=In July 2022%2C 5.2% of,three times the summer average.
  17. There does seem to be several around lately. Prior to this week, I hadn't seen one for about 20 yrs
  18. Over the last week I've seen four Hummingbird-Hawkmoths. One in the garden another at a park on the outskirts of town. And today two on buddleia in town. The recent hot weather over Iberia and the UK, may of increased the number of moths that have migrated to northern Europe. https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/birdwatching/how-to-identify-birds/hummingbirds-and-hawkmoths/#:~:text=The hummingbird hawkmoth is abundant,in Europe in the spring. I took this today in town on my phone. PXL_20220827_152709354~7.mp4
