Settled a tiny bit in Shanklin IoW but stopped now  Does anyone know if that’s it for us or will we get a bit more??

There won't much during the day Today just the odd flurry here and there, but I'm fairly confident we may get a bit more much later this Evening and into the night which will  likely give an extra dusting :). The far South of the Island will be mostly affected though I reckon.

  2. Afternoon all, nice to see some of you getting snow

Anyway after a mostly cloudy start things brightened up for a time with some good sunny spells and broken cloud in a cold Northerly wind. Cloud amounts are now increasing again with some sunshine just holding on.

  3. Hi everyone, happy new yeah to you all and hope everyone has good one this year! Anyway on to the Today's weather!

Observations: The first day of the new year was cold one, the Morning started very ICY with freezing fog covering much of the island. Some areas were so white it looked like snow with the rime coating everything. This fog lifted into a lot of general cloud with just a few limited bright spells with lingering mist and low cloud over high ground. Some areas even kept onto ICE throughout the whole day too. Into the Evening some patchy rain, drizzle and even sleet affected parts of the Island including my location, though was too light to accumulate.

Current: Cold and cloudy with very light patchy rain and drizzle, not heavy enough to accumulate.
    Temperature: 3.4'c
    Dew point: 1.8'c
    Humidity 89%
Wind speed gust: 8mph with average speed at 4mph
    Wind Direction: North West

    Temperatures:  High 3.7'c at 20:38  Low -0.2'c at 08:08  Temp range 3.9'c
    Humidity: High 89% at 13:38  Low 86% at 00:08
    Sunshine Hours: 0.5
    Rain Today: 0.0mm
High Wind Gust: 8mph at 12:08
    Dominant Direction: West

  4. Hi everyone, I was meant to share our report yesterday from yesterdays crazy showers and winds from our IWMETSERVICE page, but didn't get a chance too. We have put the top 3 for the highest wind gusts around the island, our own local station and also a time lapses video from 3 of our own webcams. We have 4 of our very own webcams and 2 shared cams.

Yesterday saw a large amount of rainfall along with some extremely strong gusts of wind at times giving over-topping waves at many beaches. During yesterday afternoons showers we saw a mixture of torrential rain, hail and even the odd rumble of thunder towards more southern parts of the island. The showers also locally intensified the wind strength with a gust of 68mph in Shorwell, 76mph at our Shanklin station and 92mph at the Needles! There may have been 60-80mph gusts in other areas too but we don't have any data for those locations

Our Shanklin station recorded 20.7mm of rain through the daylight hours and received 30.0mm worth over the last 24 hours.

Am I right in thinking that there is another squall trying to form behind the main one?

    squalls.jpg

Indeed, I got more interest in that 2nd one, me and my friend were looking at a potential 2nd squall line yesterday for this Evening, with us putting a yellow warning out for our local weather site. I personally think that will have a better chance for lightning potential, especially the further East it goes. The atmosphere becomes drier and colder for a time after the first squall line passes through, so with that 2nd squall line and any potential showers behind it would have more organisation and a sharper look to it and I always find they have better lightning potential

  6. Have a had a few showers the last hour or so, small but heavy with a really cool looking shower looking out Sandown bay about half hour ago.

Certainly got my interest towards this Evening and some of tomorrow's showers, closely watching that band and those squall lines as it strengthens the further East it goes, there is some really gusty winds picking up now, especially along the seafront itself. I'm actually feeling fairly confident on the Lightning potential over the next 24 hours as well.

  7. We have had some very heavy downpours in the last couple of hours. What started as a few individual showers ahead of that system was followed by a 2nd line of which came right threw the island. Right now though currently got moderate to heavy wind, with the winds picking up rapidly! In general today though its be quite an active day, showers on and off all day with a brief dry spell through part of the Afternoon, some of the showers looked petty cool with some nice structures and rain cores.

Current Temperature: 10.9'c after an overall high of 15.9'c. We have also recently just recorded a 32mph gust from our Shanklin station.

Here is a couple more images from Today

  8. Its been a fairly active Morning here, there were a couple of showers early this Morning then they cleared for a time, but further showers developed and moved in during the last couple of hours. One of the showers which was our last one had a pretty impressive rain core and even produced a bit of hail, though the main part of the core clipped the South Coast of the island before moving out into Sandown bay.  Managed to get a couple of photo snaps but was a little late to catch the core when it was at its strongest.

Anyway now the showers have cleared through for the time being, though with the mix of sunny spells and broken cumulus.

Current Temperature: 13.3'c     Overnight Low: 10.6'c        Today's high so far:  15.2'c

I had to use my phone camera, so the quality isn't the best.

Indeed, certainly the South Coast potentially seeing some very heavy rainfall! It's definitely going to make up for so much dry weather this year barring the odd unsettled blip here and there. We haven't seen much rain here on the Island at all this year, though this coming up does look rather unpleasant for sure!

I've noticed that! Surprised that the squall hasn't produced any lightning yet given the intensity of it on the radar.

I'm a bit a surprised it hasn't either to be honest, that stuff going through the heart of Dorset looks really intense for sure! I got a feeling the clouds tops aren't quite high enough to spark   The channel stuff has fragmented a bit though at the moment, hoping that area can re intensify a bit more again!

  11. The rain has eased a little now after some persistent moderate to heavy rain, though it is still spitting a little bit with the odd intermittent light to moderate burst at times, along with some fairly strong gusts of wind. That second area of heavy rain isn't too far away however, which to me looks like there is a squall line trying to develop on the western edge of this rain band!

    Temperature: 15.5'c
    Wind direction/speed: SW 16mph
    Latest Wind gust: 27mph
    Rainfall: 1.5mm so far.

  12. Afternoon all

This Morning started off a bit mixed, there were some long cloudy periods with some showers on and off. We did see a few limited bright spells at times but these didn't last very long, as thicker and more extensive cloud arrived a couple hours ago. Now the front edge of that rain band has now just reached our shores which is currently falling light to moderate at the moment. Along with this the winds are picking up slowly with some stronger gusts around wind facing coasts.

Current temperature: 16.8'c            Todays high so far: 17.8'C            Overnight Low: 13.3'c

Current average wind direction and speed: SW 13mph            Latest gust speed: 24mph              Highest gust: 30mph

Edit: Some heavier bursts of rain already started

  13. Woke up to a nice little surprise this Morning thanks to a rumble of thunder, looked outside to see some giant mid level cumulus which went cumulonimbus and had a mean looking base! A couple of localised elevated showers developed just off the East coast of the Island around mid Morning, which then turned into a small little storm. I didn't see any Lightning but had some nice rumbles of thunder, took me by complete surprise!

  14. Very warm here on the Isle of Wight too, we managed 27.4'c where I am on the East coast, along with the rest of the island into the mid to high 20's as well. Now currently at 24.2'c.

Really enjoyed the last few days, almost feels like late July- early August but I can definitely feel that Autumn feel despite the heat due to some trees changing colour and the fading daylight. Quite looking forward now to the journey into the heart of Autumn and Winter!

  15. For me I like winter about the same amount as I used too, maybe slightly less. That's mainly because of the same reason, I do prefer the longer daylight hours and warmth in the summer as well, there's just something about it

As a weather enthusiast I'm more of an all rounder, thunderstorms and heat in the Summer will always be my number one favourite, but at the same time I get just as excited for snow and extreme cold events too. Though I find it's a different sort of excitement when it comes to cold and snow for me, thunderstorms and heat I get more adrenaline and pumped up more, where snow and cold I feel the type of excitement like I was kid at Christmas . I do enjoy winter storms too with crazy winds and also the prospect channel showers and thundery activity, especially from September through to around January. Then of coarse February and March are probably the 2 months I've seen my most snow days over my whole life, down here on the island.

Though again my struggles with winter are the long nights, they do start to drag on for me after a while too, and also the odd winters where there is a lot of cloud and murk and not much else going on, last winter and the winter was a bit like that for me, so I didn't really enjoy them last 2 that much, especially last winter.
