    Quick question... Although I have a subscription to the NW radar, I downloaded an Android app called Dark Sky after seeing it mentioned on here somewhere in the last day or two. After playing with it, seems pretty good and user friendly with a lot of info. That said, anything could impress at first glance with some flashy graphics. Wondered if anyone else has used it for any length of time and what your opinions are?

    Best of luck with your vigil at the window - I'm heading to bed soon as I have to get up in about 5 hours!! Just hoping that by midday on Weds we can better guess the conditions on Thursday - I have a meeting scheduled near Exeter that I drive to. Normally leave Epping around 5am to get there for 8.30 and start the return journey at 3 in the afternoon. Usually hit the M25 at 5pm and its bloody awful without adding snow into the mix!! Will cancel early afternoon on Weds if there is a chance of heavy snow en route but am conscious there will be a lot of mickey-taking if it then doesn't materialise... Que sera sera!!

    Cheers Sno' Hardly ever post on the forum despite joining a while back. Just looked at my profile, its actually almost 10 years ago - where has that time gone!! Prefer to read and try to learn from the folks on here with a lot of knowledge - Steve Murr, BA, Chionomanic, Captain S to mention just a few. Was a complete novice back then but would like to think that I have a better understanding now of models and synoptics from their posts over the years. Still class myself as a complete amateur though - every day is a school-day!! One thing I'm pretty sure of though is that no-one knows what will happen over the next few days, I've seen things that more experienced people though were odds-on to happen go into reverse at the last minute and conversely, something popping up out of the blue (snow particularly) that no-one saw coming. I've had very little from this set-up so far but its good to watch developments and have potential for interesting weather for some parts rather than the usual sunny spells and rain!

    Wow, it's quiet in here tonight and having read back a few pages, quite a few annoyed/disappointed posters!! Think the problem stems from the current set-up being called the Beast from the East. That suggests to the mind Russia & Siberia, the most common next connection with these places being heavy and prolonged snow, several feet deep etc. Some of the media in the UK positively encourages this train of thought. The "Beast" was only ever meant to bring an uncommon period of deep cold to the UK - which it has. Any accompanying snowfall is a sideshow rather than a certainty which I think a few people have misunderstood or forgotten. Also remember that we are only one day in to a cold spell likely to go on for another three days at least. There is every chance that most in the region will see a covering of snow at some point - probably not the amount hoped for but things can change at short notice in this unusual situation. Chins up - most years we would just be looking at an outlook of mild temperatures and rain at the beginning of March - lets see what happens!

    I am in Epping looking out of a second floor window towards Harlow and it is blue sky in that direction. Think what you were looking at will go several miles to the north of here and North London. Can't see any showers here for the next hour or so.

    A dusting on the pavements, grass and cars here in Epping, everything has turned white. Still coming down reasonably hard but the flakes are tiny - would be hard to see if not in front of a light.

    Don't take this in the wrong way but if I was still up north you'd be referred to as a "wee daftie". Looking back over the last few days, you've had several feet of snow predicted all over the place and even had the bloody army out on the streets. Even today you were referencing another 20cm+ for West London at half past two!!. Clearly your heart is in the right place but try looking at and understanding the forecasts from the likes of Steve Murr, John Pike, Coast & others here. Good luck.

    Don't post much but been an avid reader of the forums over the last week. Thanks to all the more "expert" commentators, the analysis and thought process has been interesting as always. In Epping, we've probably had 2 cm this morning on the lying stuff and am guessing from the NW radar that'll be dying off over the next hour or so but am pleased with what we have here - perhaps 5-6cm lying from the last couple of days. Cheers all.

    About to head to bed now, am in Epping just outside the M25 and NE of London. Probably got 10-12cm here with very light snow still falling - just wondered if there was anything more to come tonight or tomorrow, seems to have died out on the radar but I understand some people here said there was still a chance of more precip into Sunday morning - has that gone because the snow band came over the country quicker than expected and didn't stall?

    I know exactly how you feel. About 8 years ago I left my girlfriends house in Stirling and drove back to Newcastle, somewhere on the top of the hills I was caught in a fog that left me with no visibility beyond the front of my bonnet, even when I switched my headlights off and put the side lights on. It was about 3am and I was the only person on that road through Northumberland National Park, did about 5mph looking out of the driver side window and following the white line in the middle of the road. Terrifying, if I could have seen a farm track I would have pulled over and slept in the car, couldn't see a thing out of any window, it was as if they'd been painted with emulsion. Longest hour of my life - I did about 5 miles in 65mins until I got back below the fog line. Never again.

    Appreciate the explanation. Do you still think there is any chance of this stalling to the east of me for the lucky folks in EA and Kent? Thought this was meant to be a snow situation that passed over the SE and EA for 9 hours but from the MW radar it seems to all be over? Is the radar on form or can we expect anything more tonight?

    At the risk of sounding like a spoilt child, am looking at the NW radar and seeing a band of precipitation nearly clearing London and heading east at a rate of knots. Is that because the snow got here a lot earlier than previously thought or is there more following behind? I know it arrived here a bit early at 9pm but thought it was meant to be a 6-9hour event? Sorry, ignore me, am a novice and also a bloody idiot!!

    Have just been out and given my little Lotus a boot around the car park. Lightweight and rear wheel drive is fun in the snow... At least until you have to go up a hill with summer tyres and car that weighs nothing All good fun though!!

    Thanks for the reply mate, as I said, have been trying to study the weather on and off for a couple of years - bloody complicated though isn't it? Just when you think you've learned the terminology you have to learn more about the models... And then the model's models And the the model's model's models!! Fair play to all the good forecasters here - hope I can do the same in a few (many) years.

    Hi guys, Long time reader but very infrequent commenter here - purely 'because I come here to read and learn and generally don't have anything to add that the resident experts haven't said. Loving a bit of snow tonight - would warn anyone in London that it has already halted the Central Line to Epping, no trains are running out here tonight. Quick question for the folks in the know, have purchased a subscription to the Netweather radar and the V.6 version is very impressive!! Look like the precipitation is dying out though - I know it got here earlier than planned but will it die out in a couple of hours?? Thought it was due to hover over us until the early hours - or was that only East Kent and the east Norfolk coast? NB. While I do my one post per year, big thanks to Steve Murr, have been reading this forum for a good few years and you have proved your worth yet again. Also TEITS, GP, C and the rest of you - you know who you are, you make this place interesting and I thank you for your input. Cheers.

    Still snowing lightly in Epping although all earlier small accumulations on grass and roofs has now gone.

    Hi all, I am also in Epping and can confirm that it's still coming down albeit not quite as heavily as 15 mins ago. Didn't expect this at all!!
