  1. A thundery weekend here with persistent storms yesterday evening and a big one currently passing through. It's gone from 30C and sunny to 20C and dull in the space of two hours. The grass is gradually turning green again.
  2. There's a Frost Hollow who lives not far away in Oldham, though that's probably not what you meant.
  3. From 34C and dry yesterday to 30C and humid today, which definitely feels hotter!. I'm finally getting some thunderstorms now as well (got woken up early this morning by an almighty bang).
  4. I'd give summer here so far 9/10. It's been very sunny and warm since the beginning of June. The one downside is the lack of thunderstorms (they missed again today!), and although I've personally enjoyed the lack of rain and the usability it has provided, the ground does need some of the wet stuff pretty badly. Meanwhile, some places in Slovakia didn't drop below 25C last night, ahead of the cold front advancing eastwards. Nitra bottomed out at 25.6C.
  5. The forecast wasn't that far off in the end. It got to 36-37C at most local stations, with 37.6C at Slovenský Grob (just outside Bratislava). Elsewhere, Mužla "only" managed about 38C after such a hot start along with Hurbanovo (usually considered the hottest village in Slovakia - it holds the national record of 40.3C from July 2007). Certainly a very hot day. A cold front is due to sweep through in the early hours bringing thunderstorms but the models keep flip-flopping on the amount of rain, sometimes showing none at all. The ground is absolutely parched at the moment.
  6. Red heat warning in effect here today, only the second time I've ever seen that happen (the other was in August 2017). The forecast was for 38C but that will be difficult to achieve with most stations in the area "only" at 30-31C at 11am (Slovenský Grob is the warmest local station at 32.6C). Mužla in the south of the country is worth keeping an eye on. It's already 35.0C there! (the same location reached 38.0C a couple of weeks ago)
  7. Hot week coming up here. Forecast high of 37C on Thursday.
  8. A hot, sunny and dry June here. The first half was slightly average temperature-wise but the second half was very warm indeed. Many stations in Central and East Slovakia broke their record maxima for June, while in the west Bratislava-Koliba set a new national June record for consecutive tropical nights (20C and above), with six from 19-24th. Sunshine at Bratislava Airport was about 380 hours and rainfall ended up around 12mm - Stupava (another nearby station) only managed 6.8mm. Despite an abundance of thundery activity in Central Europe there's been sod all here, which is unusual for the time of year. The only proper thunderstorm I've had so far this year was in April (and brought snow with it!).
  9. Today I've learnt that if you don't like cool, grey summer days you can put a few layers on and it'll feel just like Tahiti.
  10. I didn't laugh but believed it had to be wrong. It's got to be the most exceptional heatwave I've ever seen worldwide, even moreso than the Russian heatwave of 2010 (though that one went on for a long time). Here it's been another sticky night (one local weather station didn't drop below 23C) with 34-35C expected today, but a cool-down is in store for the rest of the week. It's been very dry and the grass has turned yellow in many places.
  11. Okay then, Central Europe is more likely to get strong tornadoes than Britain - but it's still so unlikely that you wouldn't ever think about it. You make it sound like it's a normal part of the weather here, as though people wish summers were cool and unsettled (as you like them). They don't, simple as.
  12. Getting hit by a tornado like that in Europe is so rare you wouldn't give it any thought. It's like saying Birmingham has a dangerous climate because they had a tornado in 2005.
  13. Slight correction - Mužla reached 38.0C. Much cooler here today ("only" 27C) but early next week could bring more high temperatures. Certainly a very warm second half of June.
  14. In other news, Hungary recorded its first ever 40C in June today and the Czech Republic got hit by tornadoes. There was a pretty bad one in Hodonín:
  15. Some ridiculous temperatures being forecast for the coming days. 47C in Kelowna, 45C in Kamloops, even 40C in Vancouver.
  16. A really sultry day in Slovakia. 34C here but as high as 37.7C in the village of Mužla (not far from Esztergom in Hungary), only 0.5C short of the all-time June high. Mammatus clouds have rolled in now. A portent for fireworks this evening?
  17. I'd be very surprised if that was anywhere near accurate given that the all-time record for Kamloops is 41.7C. The Canadian record is 45C. That said, inland British Columbia does get warmer and drier summers than the UK. Vancouver would be a better comparison.
  18. 33C here currently. Last night didn't go below 22C. It's getting pretty tough to sleep without a fan I must admit. Some parts of southern Slovakia might reach 37C on Thursday, though I reckon it'll be more like 34-5C here. The all-time national record for June is 38.2C.
  19. A decent summer overshadowed by the one that came before it.
