  1. Quite a bland month for interesting weather. Started off fine and warm but followed by quite a few days of cool, cloudy and windy weather. Bit warmer and less windy in the last third of the month or so. No thunderstorms or particularly warm temperatures (two days reached 25C+) To give some credit though it was a dry month with only 17mm of rainfall. 5/10.
  2. Not sure about how other areas have done, but for my location there hasn't been a single day of thunder at all this summer, or infact at all or since 28th August last year. Certainly this year has been worse than recent years, which of course haven't exactly been great either! Looking quiet convectively for the forseeable future for here at least. Hard to believe some years in the 1990's recorded over 20 thunder days for my location. As for a general view of summer so far, it's been OK, the start was very nice but followed by a poor period of cool and windy conditions, though it has improved a bit since then. Certainly would take this June over last June but I do hope we get some interesting weather in July and August, because this June has been pretty boring to be honest in terms of any exciting weather such as thunderstorms.
  3. Morning all, Another relatively cloudy start to the day. Had some quite heavy rain for a time yesterday afternoon, but again no T&L. Some very interesting charts this morning with a brief hot spell mid-week. Temperatures could reach into the high 20's celsius according to GFS 0z: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn9017.png Potential for some thunderstorms too: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn8411.png ECM and UKMO would have temperatures into the mid-20's celsuis in places. Certainly potential there though for very warm temperatures on Wednesday and thunderstorms.
  4. Hello all, Well finally I've finished my exams! A great sense of relief, especially after I put a lot of time into preparing for my last exam! It's been about a week since I lasted posted, but the weather in the past week has been poor it has to be said! Cool, gloomy conditions and in recent days a really brisk wind for the time of year, creating a mess in the garden! Disappointing after a pleasant and sunny start to summer. Despite the cool conditions, I don't think it has rained for a couple of weeks of least and the grass is beginning to look very dry and brown, though the wind of recent days will of dried the grass out even further, so could do with some rain to freshen things up a bit (and some more sunshine!) Reading over the potential thunder risk tonight, it got me thinking about the lack of storm activity so far this year, I know we aren't too far into what is regarded as the storm season, but usually we would have had at least one or two thunderstorms by now. The past 6-7 years haven't been too overwhelming for thunder activity, compared to the years before, a trend perhaps. It does look like we will see some rain over the next few days, and a much lighter wind after tomorrow, which should make it feel a lot more pleasant. May very briefly turn quite warm during the middle of the coming week. Hope you all have a great weekend!
  5. Indeed Sud-Tirol is a wonderful place, it's where I go on my skiing holidays in Italy (about an hour south of Innsbruck). Love the culture and in particular the friendliness of the locals. Really want go there sometime in the summer in the future, to experience a completely contrasting landscape to the one I'm used to seeing when I go there! Hopefully will be going back for a sixth time to the area next winter. I have been to Innsbruck once a few years ago. A truly wonderful city. If I remember it was in February, where in the city it felt spring-like but this contrasted with the snow capped mountains that surrond the city, a fascinating site!
  6. After making a couple of posts in other sections of the forum, thought it would be good to pop in this lovely thread and say hello! It's been a fantastic start to meteorological summer, and although temperatures have been quite average, it certainly feels like summer with the strength of the sun! If I was being picky then I'd like there to be less of a breeze, but apart from that no complaints from me. Another fairly decent weekend coming up, with temperatures between 16-20C. Looking at the models, we begin to pick up more of southerly source of air as we enter the new week, so temperatures could be pushing 25C by next Thursday. Finish my exams by the end of next week, so hopefully there will still be some decent weather to enjoy once I've finished!
  7. Hello all, It has been a fair while since I last posted on this thread or on any other part of the forum. Main reason for this is due to upcoming exams, attempting to put some good effort into them to hopefully do well in return! Meanwhile, it's a pretty wet and cold morning here, a band of rain passed through earlier and another band is approaching. Over the past month or so the weather hasn't been too inspiring I have to admit, a few good sunny days such as May Day but the weather over the past few days in particular has been poor. It reached 24C on this day here last year, might be lucky to reach 9C today. Thankfully this weekend doesn't look too bad, and certainly some 'usable' weather. Fingers crossed that it turns warmer and sunnier as we enter meteorological summer! Anyhoo, that's probably it from me for the next few weeks! Have a great bank holiday weekend, and I'll be back in mid-June! Kind regards, Ben.
  8. Evening all, Sun broke through the cloud during the afternoon to leave a pleasantly warm end to the day, with temperatures up to 17C. Quite windy though with a gust of 44mph earlier. The grass is much greener due to the warmer temperatures and also due to the rain that we had last week. Tulips have been coming through quite quickly and most of the daffodils are out. Also budding on trees and bushes has become quite noticeable in the past few days. The weekend, in particular Saturday doesn't look too bad weather-wise. Temperatures around 12-14C, but with long sunny spells it should feel pleasantly warm in the sun! Also after tomorrow the wind will begin to die down, which I'm looking forward to!
  9. Afternoon all, Cloud has been breaking up during the morning, leaving hazy sunshine, currently 10.5C. Looking forward to the weekend with the weather warming-up, Met Office currently going for 18C on Sunday for here with sunny spells. GFS has temperatures rising into the mid-teens at least from Sunday onwards. ECM suggestive of similar values. The output looks great for a decent spell of dry, fairly warm and useable weather IMO!
  10. Morning all, Not too bad of a start to the day here, with the sun trying to break through. Another airfrost this morning with the temperature dipping just below freezing, and is currently at 6.8C. A good signal for HP to build over the continent over during the latter half of the week, with a deep-ish low in the Atlantic helping to draw up south-westerly/southerly winds by the weekend. Could be a much warmer weekend than we've been used to for the past month or two, at the moment Sunday looks like a nice day going off the model output. In the meanwhile some rain looks quite likely during the week, must of been a while since it last rained here!
  11. A bright-ish day here with varying amounts of cloud, 5.6C with a fairly strong breeze (again!). Did notice the NAEFS anomaly charts do have a signal of higher than average pressure building over the continent then to the east of the UK: http://176.31.229.228/modeles/gens/naefs/run/naefs-0-0-192.png?12 http://176.31.229.228/modeles/gens/naefs/run/naefs-0-0-228.png?12 Not the strongest signal at the moment though definently one to watch over the next few days. ECM ens mean also has pressure building towards the end of next week: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reem1921.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reem2161.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reem2401.gif Think the chart below was updated yesterday, but the 8-14 day upper air 500mb charts from NOAA don't look too bad, if you're looking for drier settled weather, higher than average pressure over the continent with the main trough out in the mid-Atlantic, which could promote a NW/SE scenario of wetter, cooler weather in the NW and drier, warmer weather in the SE. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/814day.03.gif Hopeful of some warmer weather in the medium term. May have a unsettled spell of weather during the middle of next week. Have a good weekend everyone!
  12. Would agree that there have been some decent summer months in the past few years (for here at least, though I know it's not been the case for quite a few members), a few that come to mind are August 2009, June + July 2010 and August 2012. Last August in particular was a good month IMO with 28 out of 31 days recording a maximum of over 20C+, quite a few days of 25C+ and a couple of days 30C+ which also included a couple of decent thunderstorms. Ideal summer temperatures for me are around 24-26C, with low humidity and a slight breeze, coupled with clear blue skies and a few thunderstorms. Would also be nice to get a decent Spanish plume this summer with temperatures pushing 35C+ and some decent thunderstorms! Hopefully we don't see any NE'ly winds like we did last July, which really did suppress temperatures, or any persistent rain events like last June which again suppressed temperatures, I can remember one day the temperature scraping 10C in June with persistent rain, felt more like an October day!
  13. After some snow flurries earlier, lovely clear blue skies outside now, albeit with a cold wind.
  14. Cold, grey and cloudy rubbish outside this morning once again, and yet another day with that nagging E/NE'ly wind! The warmer weather cannot come soon enough..
  15. Well a lovely day here, cloud built up mid-morning but has since burned off again leaving clear blue skies. Still chilly in the breeze however, 6.8C with a low dewpoint of -9.2C due to low humidity. Could see the dizzy heights of double figure temperatures being reached by the weekend!
  16. A nice end to the day here, though still a chilly wind. Temperatures dropping in clearer skies, 0C. A few tentative signs of the weather warming up ever so gradually, hope it won't be too long until we get a spell of weather with temperatures in the mid-high teens, with plenty of warm sunshine!
  17. A very notable month for cold. The mean temperature for March was just 2.3C, colder than any of the winter months just gone (February was coldest with a mean temperature of 2.7C), such an average would of been unthinkable a few years ago, let alone in March! Coldest temperature recorded was -8C, which is also very notable for March. Another very interesting statistic was the prevalent wind direction, nearly half of the time the wind came from a NE'ly direction! As for snow, must of been at least 7-8 days of snow falling, not so many lying with a couple of inches on the 23rd and some light coverings on a couple of other days, though pretty rare for here it has to be said. Only a couple of days that can be classed as spring-like, with one standout day on the 5th, when it reached 16C. (Statistics from Cambridge University weather station). So yes quite an incredible month for cold!
  18. A slightly better day than of late, sunny spells and the biting wind of recent days less prevalent. A chilly day though, only a max of 2.8C, already down to -0.8C in the clearer conditions. Taking a look at the NAEFS anomaly charts, a continuing signal for HP roughly around the Iceland/Greenland area with troughing to the south of the UK over the continent, suggestive of continuing colder than average conditions for some time yet, with winds generally from an eastern quadrant, for example: http://176.31.229.228/modeles/gens/naefs/run/naefs-0-0-168.png?12 http://176.31.229.228/modeles/gens/naefs/run/naefs-0-0-240.png?12 ECM 12z ensemble mean suggests something similar: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reem1681.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reem2401.gif Wouldn't bet against temperatures rising a little over the next week or two, though in my opinion it won't be until the second week of April until we have a chance of seeing anything substiantially milder than of late, with a cold easterly/north-easterly flow remaining prevalent over the next 7-10 days at least. Pretty remarkable period of weather it has to be said!
  19. It felt very bitter outside today, with a fairly strong breeze at times and dry air due to lower humidity than of late. Max of about 2.5C on my weather station, though a lot of snow thawed out today. Cold looks like it will keep on going into April now, the average temperature this month on the Cambridge university weather station is just 2.8C so far!
  20. Snow beginning to pick up in intensity in the past 30 minutes or so, radar looks pretty good for here so it looks like another spell of snow for this unusual March weekend has just started!
  21. Must be about 7cm perhaps on some surfaces here this morning, with a few flakes of snow falling. The model output has a battle between cold and mild air at the end of next week, GFS has the mild win out however ECM has the cold win out. Certainly with such a battle I think there is certainly a possibility of more snow towards the end of next week, whether it's just transitory or something more significant is a different question however!
  22. Got about 6cm here, shame that temperatures were just a little too high late morning/afternoon as I'm sure I'd easily have more snow than from the snow event in January. Hopefully a bit more to come during the night, seems to be a nice band of heavier precipitation atm over north Cambridgeshire + Norfolk.
  23. The story of today so far for here has been light-ish snow for most of the day though after 9am or so the snow struggled to settle. However in the past hour or so the intensity of snow has picked up and the snow is settling on all surfaces once again. Would be nice to get one more decent covering tonight!
  24. Morning all, A light covering of snow here so far with moderate snow falling outside. Currently 0.8C.
