  1. Can also confirm snow in Keele, Staffs. Decent flakes too!
  2. Another beautiful sunny morning here, turned cloudier after lunchtime though. Hopefully the winds won't be too damaging tonight and into tomorrow, strong winds are by far my least favourite form of weather! Winds starting to pick up noticeably here.
  3. Good evening all, After a beautiful sunny morning, a noticeable drop in the temperature around 2pm after a heavy shower, followed by another shower a bit later on in the afternoon. Hopefully a few wintry showers will make it to our region overnight.
  4. Another crisp winters day here with a hoar frost this morning, something I haven't seen for quite a while. Min was -2C, currently 4C.
  5. A lovely winters day here after a hard frost this morning, the temperature maxing out at 4C today. Sadly turning cloudier overnight with a couple more coldish days before the mild weather returns. Also have loved the calmness of recent days, not looking forward to seeing the return of windy weather! Encouraging charts from the stratosphere tonight, hopefully if they come into fruition it may help increase the chances of a cold spell further down the line later in January. Time will tell though! Hopefully, we won't have to put up with a zonal pattern for too long.
  6. Raining here, mainly light with a few flakes in the heavier bursts. According to the weather station on Wunderground closest to my location, temp is 3.1C and DP 2C. Hopefully conditions will become more favourable over the next few hours for some snow here.
  7. A nice afternoon here after a grotty morning. Hopefully the last of the mild temperatures for a while. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas!
  8. The main difference this year like East_England_Stormchaser91 has to be the frequency of thunderstorms, in 2013 (and in past years) there really was a lack of convective weather. But this year, I've lost count with the amount of thunderstorms that occured around here. If going by the Met Office definition of thunder days, where if I recall the average for East of England is 15-16 (may of been the 1971-2000 average) then this year we've probably had at the very least 20 thunder days (most likely more than that). Where as such in 2013, there was only about 4-5 thunder days if I recall correctly. A much milder year in general, complete lack of frosts, in 2013 spring didn't really get going until the second week of April, whereas this year springlike weather was here by the end of February.
  9. A reasonable day for the time of year, if quiet. Sunny morning but mostly cloudy by the end of the day. Max temp 13C. Interesting thoughts CS Hopefully we'll get at least a couple of cold, snowy spells this winter to make up for last winter!
  10. Hello all, it's been quite a while since I last posted on here ( over a year I think ) for various reasons including the fun of moving house and work! Hope everyone on here is doing well. It's safe to say Autumn has finally arrived in the past week or so, particularly after the exceptionally mild weather at the end of October. A gusty, dull day here with a few passing showers and the temperature is currently 9C. Hopefully the wind will calm down over the weekend, with Sunday looking like the better day of the two. I look forward to posting in this thread again!
  11. Well I grew up during that 'era' of mild winters, so for me February 2009 is one of my favourite periods of snowy weather I have seen, because I had never seen so much snow in such a short period of time (3 snow 'events' in 6 days). Chart: 2nd Feb 09 http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/2009/Rrea00120090202.gif This snowy period of weather began on the 1st February (a Sunday if I recall) with snow showers that became increasingly frequent by late evening, and by that time we had a nice covering. Had a fair amount of snow fall overnight and though I can't remember how much we had, it must of been at least 4-5 inches (though nowhere near what some locations in the Thames Estuary recieved). Snow continued to fall into the afternoon with further accumilations, though it was becoming increasingly marginal as a mild sector of air was making inroads. I can remember a BBC forecast warning of a organised band of heavy snow moving in from France, but unfortunately the associated mild sector with the low meant that further snow failed to settle. Chart: 5th Feb 09: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/2009/Rrea00120090205.gif Then a few days later on the 5th, a low with it's associated fronts was moving up through the Bay of Biscay, a battleground event where in the end the snow-rain line was only 15-20 miles south of my location. A further 4 inches of snow fell in the early hours of the 5th with some bigger falls across the east Midlands if I recall. Chart: 6th Feb 09: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/2009/Rrea00120090206.gif An event that developed quite quickly if I recall, with the snow line further south meaning many areas of southern England seeing a period of snow. Again around 4 inches fell. There was another transient snow event on the 12th with milder air following in behind. 3 inches of snow fell before the snow turned to rain and this cold spell was over. It's a shame that milder air followed behind the snow during this period of weather resulting in some rapid thaws of snow, but it was such a great period of weather following all of those mild winters. Fortunately we've had some great snow events since then, in Dec 09, Jan 10, Feb 10, Feb 12, Jan 13 and Mar 13. (Dec 10 was exceptional for cold though not for snow, but it was a great month!)
  12. Evening all, hope you are all well! Been quite a while since I have posted on the forums. It was a very decent summer here with July of course being the stand out month for warmth and sunshine. July's average temperature was a very warm 19.3C. The one big letdown (again) was the lack of storms, we did have a couple of nice storms but nothing more. I think my location has only had 3 'thunder days' this year and I'd be surprised if I heard any more thunder until next Spring. Anyway Autumn has certainly arrived in the past week with more rain currently falling. I hope at some point we'll see a decent Atlantic storm this Autumn even if it's just one, another thing that has been lacking in recent years. Hopefully we'll also get a couple of dry sunny periods of weather in October and November with cool crisp days and frosty nights.
  13. Morning all, a dull morning though no rainfall. Currently 17.7C. As Steve says, hopefully we'll see some sunshine in the afternoon. Also, happy birthday Perfect Storm/ Paul. Hope you have a great day!
  14. Evening all, a very warm day again here, with a maximum temperature of 28C, this is despite the forecast maximum of 23C. Rain should arrive here in about an hour-1/2 hours time.
  15. Evening all, yet another fine and warm day here with a maximum temperature of 27.4C. GFS and NNM sends the heaviest of the rainfall tomorrow night up the western side of UK, however I suppose it's down to radar watching to see where the heaviest of the rain is and who will escape the worst of it! Beyond tomorrow night's rainfall event, temperatures are back into the low 20's celsius for a few days (tomorrow will also see temperatures ranging between 18-21C), and the risk of showers and some longer spells of rain Tuesday and Wednesday. However it appears towards the middle of next week things will warm up again, with ECM for example drawing up some very hot air, with 22-23C T850's over the SE at T+168: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1682.gif Interestingly the Canadian GEM model also has a very hot plume of air around the same timeframe too. Plenty of thunder storm potenital from that ECM chart, and also temperatures into the low-30's celsius, possibly pushing towards 35C! One to watch over the next few days for sure. However the GFS is different at this timeframe as you may expect, with the trough too far north and orientiated differently resulting in the very hot air flooding into the continent rather than the UK, though it would still be very warm with temperatures reaching up to 25-26C. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1682.png So to summarise, temperatures returning to average values for the next few days with all places seeing some rainfall (though amounts will vary), warming up again in the middle of next week with the possibility of seeing a hot plume of air affecting the region towards Thursday/Friday of next week.
  16. Evening all, another fine and warm day here with a maximum temperature of 27C. Some light and patchy rain crossing the region tonight, and for the next few days it should remain pleasantly warm, with temperatures into the mid-twenties celsius for many areas. Next period of interest is Saturday night into Sunday, and the potential for heavy, thundery rain. Still quite a way out in terms of knowing where the heaviest of the rain will be etc. Differences as you would expect between the main models over the positioning, such as ECM 12z showing a spell of heavy rain for most while on GFS (12z) there isn't much of note north of London. Undoubtedly there will be further changes right up until the time. Will be interesting to also see the Met Office's view in the form of the FAX charts, in comparison to GFS, ECM and UKMO. In the medium term, I think the outlook is quite respectable if you like warm and settled weather. For example, in a weeks time the NAEFS still has a higher than average anomaly nearby over the continent, with a trough centred out in the Atlantic: http://176.31.229.228/modeles/gens/naefs/run/naefs-0-0-168.png?12 Though I suspect it will be cooler and more unsettled for the NW of the UK, I wouldn't be suprised if the predominant theme was warm and mostly settled for our part of the country, with occasional rainfall. ECM 0z ens from this morning had a similar pattern: http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/ecmwf/runs/2013072400/EDM1-168.GIF?24-12 Though the signal does wane a bit after this timeframe, I think well into next week it will remain generally warm for all with some risk of rain such as on Saturday night.
  17. Torrential rain and lightning about every 30 seconds here at the moment.
  18. Morning all, was woken up during the night at about 2:15am due to thunder and lightning to my west. Saw some awesome bolts of CG lightning. Woken up again not too long ago by more T&L, accompanied by some much needed rainfall that is currently ongoing. A good night for storms and hopefully a good day of storms to come!
  19. Afternoon all, after a cloudy start to the day the cloud quickly burnt off leading to temperatures rocketing, currently 32C. Hopefully it will all go bang later!
  20. Evening all, another fine and very warm day here, though unlike recent days it stayed cloud-free throughout. Maximum temperature recorded was 28.3C. Quite an impressive week temperature wise, three days reaching 30C+ (highest temp 31.7C on Wednesday), with the lowest max of 27C. A very dry month so far with only one day with rainfall, however that is likely to change as we enter the start of the new week, with hints of potentially heavy rain/thunderstorms. Been nearly 11 months since the last storm here, would be nice to see one!
  21. Afternoon all, a very warm day here again despite a relatively cloudy start to the day. Currently 29.1C, could reach 30C here again for the second day in a row.
  22. Had a maximum temperature of 28.7C here today, warmest since 18th August last year. Keeping tabs on the storms over N.Cambridgeshire, though the smaller one heading in the direction of my location doesn't look like it will deliver in terms of T&L. What wonderful weather for the Duxford airshow that is being held this weekend, totally forgot about it until I saw a Spitfire overhead. They will have the only operational Lancaster bomber in the UK in the air tomorrow (only one other in the world is operational), which is always an incredible sight to see!
  23. Evening all, After a cloudy morning, the cloud cleared to leave plenty of sunshine this afternoon with a top temperature of 25.2C. A very warm day tomorrow for all of us, somewhere in the region could reach 30C for the first time this year. Also a few thunderstorms could possibly break out tomorrow, there hasn't been a thunderstorm here for 10 1/2 months so it would be a nice suprise to see one! Sunday slightly cooler and more of a breeze prevalent but still very warm. Scrolling through several of the models, there isn't really anything to suggest any movement away from the settled, warm theme for most of us for the next week at the very least. Could turn out to be an exceptionally dry July.
  24. Morning all, A damp and cloudy start to the morning with 2.7mm of rain overnight, currently 16.8C. Last rain for some time though! Looks like a fantastic weekend of weather is coming up, with temperatures into the mid-twenties celsius and widespread sunshine. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm961.gif And continuing into the start of the new week too: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1441.gif I personally reckon the warmest temperatures in the UK in this upcoming spell of weather will be further west, perhaps in central southern England for example, or further up into Yorkshire perhaps where there is less of a breeze. I'll go for 29C in Oxfordshire. As for our region, I'll go for 28C in central London.
