  1. I tend to agree, but this year has been a bit better for storms generally than the rubbish summers of the late noughties, perhaps the return of the milder winters is playing a part to keep sst's from killing the energy in the atmosphere, if thats true bring it on, storms over ice for me anyday
  2. woke up at about 3.45am ,could not get back to sleep, as the excitement of another storm popping up was too much lol unfortunately I think I slept through the best bit , but saw two different lightning cells going on at the same time, one over towards manchester and one approaching me, but the one near me seemed less active and died off over wigan, the manc lightning was quite a bit more frequent but just distant flashes with occasional faint rumbles not as good as the storm we had in early june, but the fact it was at night made up please let there be more today, just grey cruddy stratus like clouds with moderate rain now
  3. decent thundery activity has been rare over the bulk of north west england lately, but when it does happen it seems to avoid the main land mass and go over the irish sea and just flirt with merseyside, happened last plume event, happened this plume event, i thought storms preferred land to sea! whats going on? and another moan, why why why are these thundery troughs moving up from the south ALWAYS timed to hit the NW very early morning, just as the energy is dissipating, the south coast always seems to get the timing right with the activity hitting in the evening experts explain this please, and it happens too often to be just bad timing, or the laws of statistics are getting defied oh look, it seem that situation is occurring again tonight, i expect to get the dreggs of the souths storms at about 600am saturday morning, what a shock not
  4. heard a few booms of thunder when I arrived at work in St Helens this morning from the Liverpool cell, I saw a couple of CG's , better then nothing I suppose
  5. just got up for work and was hoping to hear some thunder , fat chance of that it seems, although it was always expected to be more mainly towards the Irish sea as was the last thundery spell in the NW, Have a feeling this plume event is going to be a let down here, then again, I had my one yearly allowance of a thunderstorm in early June and should be thankful for that ! Just seen a little clip of darren betts saying these plumes could become more common in the future is global warming happens, RUBBISH!! they seem to getting LESS, I remember them saying this in the nineties too, and that put the kiss of death on them, they are not as potent or frequent in these parts anyway
  6. Anyone explain why there was not more thundery activity from yesterdays rain, a band of quite active rain sweeping in just to coincide with the heat of the early evening/ late afernnoon with much of England in the 26c to 27 c range! yet just a few isolated cells in Lincs and Essex I am sure this would have triggered more thundery weather with the same setup during the 80's and 90's , it seems a lot harder to get thunderstorms now, or is it just me?
  7. I tend to agree, i think this will tun out to be an unremarkable summer, ok so far its not exactly been a disaster, but the above averages we keep hearing are like a smack in the face, as it does not feel we have any decent hot sunny weather this time, still time though, but like another poster mentioned in another thread it seems the signs for a good classic summer would have appeared by now, time is not on our side I think its generally more of the same now towards autumn ie average type of feel
  8. so far not much , unremarkable temps so far this summer, just average or slighty above maximums , and now, looking like a period of below average, maybe the run of above average is coming to an end, just in time for mid to late summer
  9. went for a little bike ride at 10.00am this morning, it was still cloudy, and just being in a t shirt it started to feel a bit chilly, with the air moving over you faster than normal, the sun was very limited, maybe 5 minutes worth over an hour,
  10. although it a bit boring at the moment with just average temps about 21c .I cant really complain at this summer, very usable weather for cycling in comfort for example, and have seen 2 decent storms, one over my location, and the other I had to drive a 20 mile round trip to see it over liverpool way, but it was dusk and easy to see the lighting its lack of any real heat so far thats been an issue, but I wont turn my nose up at these comfortable temps we are having
  11. I am no expert on these things but I would say high to the west is not generally good, much better to the east , to allow hotter air from france and spain up over us, these are known as spanish plumes and if the pressure is not too high it will not take much to destabilise the bouyant humid air to form storms
  12. local radio this morning was saying about possible thunder in the isolated downpours in the late evening over the hills, but cant see anything happening now, I think we have used up our quota of storm days for a month or two now, possibly even a year or two lol
  13. the warington and wigan storm last tues, (not my vid) you can hear the thunder approaching is almost non stop, the violent marble size hail happens near the end of the clip, believe me the thunder much louder in the flesh , and the lightning was brighter, 8.00 is were the real fun starts
  14. actually last tuesday, I though the plume event was all but over, there had been a couple of weakish storms, going up the west side of the NW region a day or two before but saw or heard nothing here, and from experience thought that was the plume 'event', Then I noticed a huge Cb building but again to far west and travelling the path of the previous storms, then I noticed some towers growing on the south east back edge, the towers grew more and I noticed the sky growing darker on the horizon, I knew that was the section of sky that had our name on it, then the first rumble, about 30 seconds later the second rumble, then they started to increase in frequency and get louder, first visible forks started to appear , along with sheet IC lightning, all hell broke loose with a constant chorus of rumbling thunder , with a few almighty close booms thrown in, a few unfortunate properties suffered lightning damge , A classic thunderstorm out of nowhere
  15. nice to see some storm starved folk getting a good show last night, I wish our storm last tuesday would have been during darkness, the lightning every 8 secs would have looked almost supercell like cant complain though, hope there is much more to come this year,
  16. could only happen in wigan http://www.wigantoday.net/news/local/storm-reveals-cannabis-farm-1-6669432
  17. yesterdays storm here was one of those one in every three year storms, it equalled some of the storms I saw on holiday in Italy several years ago during a thundery spell they were having, one of many they get over the summer there I know some places have missed out, but I feel this year is already better than last year, and I feel its thanks to the mild winter for keeping sea surface temps above average I got two distant flashes with two distant rumbles in march, and this spell gave me two faint rumbles on saturday morning, one closer flash and one rumble during the evening, monday morning gave three distant rumbles at work in st helens, tues gave a couple of distant rumbles and one flash in the afternoon, then tues evening was the biggie, must jhave seen 100 plus flashes with continual thunder at one point, and we still have rest of june, july, august, september, october for potential, then hopefully another mild stormy winter, has the nineties style weather returned
  18. i was right under that at its peak, so reminded me of those 80's humdingers
  19. I didnt get big hail, but the amount of lightning and loudness of some of the cg's was amazing as well as the cloud structures
  20. not just 2 lol, I lost count today, maybe 70 flashes at least. 15 within a mile
  21. keep the faith, manc statistically has more thunder days than wigan,,,your turn will come
  22. nice CG shot carl, getting round 2 now , rains is torrential, but not as electrically active as that first cell which was like a continental storm can hear thunder again now
