  1. The upwards trend continues. Now 35 mins extra daylight on an evening.
  2. Will be interesting to see how this upcoming cold spell pans out. Im not an expert on cold synoptics but it looks like the low pressure will be bumping into cold air, but not especially so. We also look to be lacking a very cold feed of air from the east that was associated with the Feb 09 and late Nov 10 cold spells. On the GFS the cold does arrive from the east but too late to bring much in the way of wintriness to eastern coasts due to high pressure moving down from the north.
  3. A cold period looks likely i agree. The ECM in FI is bringing back memories of those nagging biting easterlies of March 2013. Hopefully we can get a quieter colder spell but with some decent snow thrown in too to make it notable. Cant be doing with any more strong winds like what we have now. And not too long till a Spring discussion can be opened to discuss the warmer half of the year
  4. Today is the most horrible type of cold, it just smacks you in the face when you go out and it hardly brought much in the way of sunshine here, just mostly dull with light showers. If its not going to turn mild then i at least want some sort of interest to come from this tedious cold weather. i.e snow! Models are toying with some wintry stuff i see and thankfully lighter winds too!
  5. The worst time for me is during November where the evenings have just started to get truly dark and you know its a very long time before the clocks go forward again. The darkness turns appropriate for the festive period with all the Christmas lights up. Even though January brings a slow improvement in day length, there is still the realisation that its still no way near good enough. I notice that by February the sun has a slightly brighter glow at midday and that trend continues.
  6. We are getting there. Now gaining almost 2 minutes of daylight per day in an evening.
  7. But you could also say that only 3 months of the year have true long, potentially warm evenings where the sun sets after half 8 and its light until after 9. Roughly beginning of May to the start of August. The other 6 months are the inbetween months.
  8. The cold dark season really begins in late October when the clocks go back so weve been in it for nearly 2 and a half months. Theres roughly a 3 month period with sunsets before 5pm which is reasonably long.
  9. Last night was the first time it was noticeable for me too. The sun was still glinting through the trees at 15:40 when 3 weeks ago it would have set.
  10. Incredibly mild looking charts showing up at the end of the high res GFS 12z. Night time mins of 11c next weekend.
  11. The ECM mean has as broad a westerly flow as you are likely to see. Often mild in the south, colder air coming into northern areas at times. Cant really elaborate on it much more than that.
  12. 4 out of the last 6 Februarys have been below the 81-10 average so actually weve had our fair share of cold in recent years.
  13. Well it looks like the Atlantic is waking up as we go into the new year with temps on the up. Still time for a longer colder spell than the one weve just had, but there have been many a Springlike spell in February in recent years so such a spell is just as likely too.
  14. Reading back i probably should have elaborated. The increase is now at least a minute later each day.
  15. Already gaining an extra minute of daylight in the evening.
  16. I too think it would be good to see a short freeze with snow as it acts to kill everything off before the rising temperatures and sunlight trigger all the new growth. Some colder days to come with temperatures reaching a couple of degrees above freezing but very little in the way of snow.
  17. Weve already gained 2 minutes in the evening. But its really after a couple of weeks in January that you notice it.
  18. A snow forum! well theres a first. I thought it was to discuss all weathers, likes and dislikes.
  19. Got to be a 2 from me. Its fairly interesting to see a fresh fall of snow but in reality Its just like sand falling from the sky, but white. If it hangs around it gets in the way of going about my daily life and its problematic to drive in. Im also too old for snowballs and snowmen. A sizeable fall overnight that has gone by the end of the day would be nice however.
  20. Interesting to see that its that much later than it is here. 3.57 there as opposed to 3.40 here.
  21. Were on the up! http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/kingston-upon-hull.html
  22. At the moment the big day itself looks to be mild for the southern half of the UK, cooler for the northern half with a NW flow more probable.
  23. Well todays weather has been foul with a raw wind and slate grey skies. Looking at the models its much of the same for the next 5 days then some milder incursions pushing in as we go out to day 10. The means at day 10 reflect the likelihood for milder uppers to edge in.
  24. Marvellous. But i do agree with March Blizzard, you do get acclimatised to the day length after a while and just accept it. But i still long for the big day in December when the sun sets that bit later. I like to keep an eye in this: http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/kingston-upon-hull.html
