Strong & damaging wind gusts this morning across southern England, 70mph gust Isle of Portland, Dorset; 67mph at Manston & 65mph at Lydd in Kent. Gusts on south side of not a particularly deep low tracking east, descending dry air intrusion likely bringing strong jet winds aloft downwards to surface. WV imagery shows up the dry air intrusion running across southern counties, some strong winds / low-level westerly jet at 925 hPa this morning not far aloft likely brought down to the surface in gusts by the dry air intrusion. Were stronger gusts over 70mph over northern Belgium and southern Holland. Windy again later on Tuesday / Tuesday night in the north, but looks like strongest winds peaking to the NW before landfall, with the low filling as it crosses SE across Scotland. Still a deep low though, could be 50-60mph gusts across the north, 60-70mph gusts with exposure, low could deepen more and gusts be stronger. Doesn't look like much in the way of wintriness on the way for next week away from high ground, certainly not on par as today for the north, any snow looks confined to hills for N England, though could fall to lower levels at times across Scotland. Milder gets wrapped up easily into the deep system heading for Scotland mid-week, then subsequent lows moving in from the west bring milder westerlies until later on Friday, when we see a return of deeper cold Pm flow from the NW perhaps by the weekend.10 points

The NH 500mb profile and surface analysis for midnight and the 0500 UK surface chart As can be seen there is a fair amount of moderate rain over Wales, the Midlands and a tad further north at the moment from the wave that is tracking across the country. This should have moved into the North Sea by 1200 whilst at the same time rain. sleet and snow from the other wave/occlusion feature will track east from Ireland. The snow will mainly be over the higher ground but may get to lower levels over Scotland and the north of England. Thew other main feature is the wind, it's been gusting 60mph in these parts, and this will continue to be very strong in the south for a while and generally it will be a gusty day over England and Wales it will continue to be quite windy through this evening and overnight and there will a lot of squally wintry showers in this north westerly, particularly over N. Ireland and Scotland, and there could well be hail and snow in the mix. Whilst this has been going on, and as a transient ridge slides across the country giving a quieter day on Monday, the low in the Atlantic has undergone rapid cyclogenesis near the left exit of the jet streak. Overnight Monday and through Tuesday the low deepens further before starting to drift south east NW of Scotland.whilst the associated frontal systems and heavy rain sweep across the country accompanied by very strong winds, particularly in Scotland on Tuesday with snow on the higher ground. Elsewhere once the frontal rain is through, squally showers By Wednesday the low is filling in the North Sea with a wrap around occlusion running down the east of the country which is in a very brisk north westerly with thus sunny interval and frequent showers. But as can be seen the atlantic is still active west of the ridge and by Thursday another frontal system is crossing the country, associated with a new low in the Denmark Straits, bringing more rain and strong winds. Temps are a tad above average.8 points

Some beefy snow showers today around Carrbridge with temperature hovering around 2c. Combined with a strong wind felt bitter out there. Mind you when the sun was out the scenery was exquisite, especially between Carrbridge and Ferness where a dusting of snow managed to survive for a while in the late afternoon.8 points

0.4°C and heavy snow for !last hour. Everything lovely and covered, even between the cottage and garage that's basically a quagmire. Best snow of the winter (in spring!). Morning gonna be interesting.7 points

Developing a covering on the cars, driveway, etc. Can't really see beyond that as only the garage light to go by, the rest is pitch black. Wind seems to have got stronger again by the sounds if it. Be disappointed now if I don't wake up to something white.6 points

This is what's been noted before: in some places you need to be under the deep pink bits on the radar as the pale pink is meaningless. I'm waiting for deep pink. However me wet baws are now far too warm.6 points

Don it has been a nightmare! I've been over analizing charts and ensembles for nigh on 4 months and I ain't even recorded a snow shower out of it! Everything has constantly been at 10+days,i really don't know what to name this winter! The winter of boredom, the winter of the 10+day charts, the winter of the phantom Easterly perhaps! While I'm here I would just like to thank everyone for there input this winter, some of the posts have been awesome! I've learnt a lot. There is literally to many of you to name, but what I've learnt I can't thank you all enough! I only hope you are all raring to go again come November for the long haul! And perhaps next time we will be a bit more fortunate, I was gonna finish by posting the Ecm snapshots of the next 10 day's regarding some cold, but tbh there ain't much to get overly excited about +I just couldn't be @ssed. So it's time for me to wind down and jump aboard the hunt for spring thread, at least now I will be less stressed, keep up the great posts folks, your all a credit to a great netweather forum!!!! Onwards and upwards folks!5 points

Morning Thankyou so much for your kind post Mattwolves I am honoured. It's so nice to see so many good people on here and it's such a pleasure coming on here and sharing because that is what life is about. We may never see the posters on here but just knowing that we can make it like a family environment is so good. There are many good posts on here daily, and some take a great effort in sharing their knowledge and making it easier for the less knowledgable ones to understand and that is such a honour to see, so keep up the great work . Anyway really stormy start to the day here in Walthamstow. I am sure there are a few twigs lying around. The sun has come out now and the winds should start easing later. See some up north are enjoying winters legacy, hear reports of heavy snow. Anyway whether it's the snow or the wind hope you all have a great Sunday. stay safe as always apeak soon kind regards5 points

March is often a very volatile month, can switch from winter to spring at a flick. The atlantic and arctic are at there coldest now, and an airstream from between NW and SE can pack a cold punch still. I always wait until the end of March before I feel the balance shifts to spring proper. March is like September - a transitional month, but often a hangover of the season just gone.5 points

i refuse to believe i will see anything.... although its kids fitba down the inch at 10am for 90 minutes so i suspect driving sleet that has all the poor wee subbies hanging off my leg crying to get on and run about.... as it stands despite some poor winters this would be the first winter my kids have never had enough snow to get at least a few hours sledging and the oldest is 14... granted last couple of winters it was only a couple of days opportunity but it was still an opportunity. Fingers crossed for one last hurrah5 points

To continue briefly with the ecm. The fronts on Thursday quickly clear but the next is quickly on the scene bringing more heavy rain and possibly gales Friday morning as the low tracks east between Iceland and Scotland And in fact the passes quite close to northern Scotland on it's journey through Friday which could result in severe gales there with some snow on the mountains. The low does quickly move away east but further lows have phased with the trough so sunny intervals and showers on Saturday and Sunday with temps a tad below average After a brief ridge more heavy rain and strong winds arrive on the scene late Monday as fronts associated with a new low in the Iceland area cross the country. As ever the output in the latter stages of the run to be treated with caution in this very fluid pattern5 points

Hi peeps Hey how is everyone? Hope you all are well and enjoying the weekend. I have not posted for a few days, but here I am . well it's been a blustery day here in N/E London today. The day started grey and rainy too but we managed to squeeze some sunshine in the early afternoon before cloud arrived heralding the next batch of wet weather tonight. Looks like a turbulent few days coming up with lots of rain and wind. Not expecting any wintriness here in London but looks as if places further north will be seeing some surprise snow more especially tomorrow. As some others have said this is probably winters last showdown, I think it will be probably safe to say that widespread freezing cold temperatures and snow have a slim chance now, but that does not discount snow still to fall especially in the north and higher ground in the coming week. My focus now will start to turn on humid and thundery weather. I know last summer we were lucky to get some night time storms pushing up from the continent, and I hope we have more luck with this weather than what we have had with snow. Anyway peeps enjoy the rest of the weekend, and for those further North enjoy the snow . stay safe all speak soon regards4 points
