January 2005 Weather Summary

As promised, albeit somewhat overdue, I will be posting up my 2005 monthly weather summaries! The first third was mostly dry and cloudy while I was in Tyneside, with much mild dampness from the SW. The 1st was very exciting though, with some torrential rain at 5pm, and then some snow showers in the evening as the temperature fell from 5.3C to 2.2C in just five minutes. The last two thirds of the month were spent in Lancaster. There was a memorable gale on the day I came over, with much disruption to traffic, and uprooting of trees and displacement of roofs. The wind gusted at up to 90mph, so the police should've fined the weather for speeding. Having said which, the weather did turn fine towards midmonth, with some sunshine. I remember there was a second spell of stormy winds in the pipeline, which really battered the northwest of Scotland but largely missed the rest of the country. The 17th/18th had wintry showers from a westerly, but it wasn't cold enough for snow in Lancaster, producing hail and sleet showers. The final third was mostly dry and cloudy, albeit with some sunny days towards the end, and the much-anticipated north-easterly during the last week came to nothing. The month scored 44%, which is disappointing, but did at least beat November 2004. It was the lowest score for a January since 2002.
