World Swim...

Well, today's the day for the World Swim for Malaria and so far all is going well... Although they haven't hit the million mark, they've got over 1/4 million participating and the cash is pouring in... not bad for an enterprise started by a few people operating out of their back bedrooms, eh? They've extended the event until 3rd June, as so many people only just recently found out about it... Soooo...if you want to take part, donate, etc there is still plenty of time! If you want to se

At Last...

Well a lot has happened this week.... Little scrapper's hernia seemed to be going OK and wasn't getting any worse, but suddenly on saturday night she developed a matching second one on the other side.... Soooo...we then start chasing our urgent referral (which still hasn't come through after 1 1/2 weeks!!!) and finally, through the kindness of a medical sec who bumps us up the list, get seen yesterday by a paediatric surgeon. He agrees something needs doing sooner rather than later, but as she's

Huggeeeeeeee!

Saw the health visitor again yesterday, and it turns out my attempts to become Daisy the Milch Cow have not been in vain, as little scrapper has managed to put on 9 1/2 oz!!!! Well at least we know her weight is OK. The hernia keeps coming up, and I can't wait for the referral just to check that all is OK. Oh and the little darling now has colic, so guess how much sleep we're not getting.....

Yippppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Well what a day! Little Smellie had been really not herself todayand had been comfort feeding and bawling her eyes out, and straining so after 8 hours of weird behaviour we decided that enough was enough and to go to A&E (the GP had said to do just that if she changed her behaviour at all...)..... Got seen straight away as a priority case and saw a lovely consultant who checked her all over, looked at the hernia, and has decided that as long as it remains this size that it will not need an

A Bit Better....

Well today, I'm feeling a bit more positive about everything. The GP has put through an urgent paediatric referral, so we should be seen fairly soon, also mini-roo seems happy and content so it obviously isn't causing her concern. We haven't seen the offending lump for 24 hours, so although it is still there and will have to be fixed, it's obviously not getting any worse, which is great! I just keep telling myself it's a routine op, they must do this every day, and that it's a day procedure, s

Good And Bad Day

yesterday we saw the health visitor who weighed the mini-roo and confirmed that she had put on a whole 5 1/2 oz and so was not of concern anymore...yayayayayayayay! In addition, her jaundice is definitely going and they don't want to do any blood tests, etc which is great! But then last night, while we were changing her, we noticed a little lump in her groin which got worse when she was crying....it seems it's a type of hernia called an inguinal hernia, and from hunting the web, the only cure

Baby Maths....

Well little mini-roo is still doing well (she's lost a little bit of weight but apparently that's normal for little babies) and at long last the jaundice is going Also it looks as if she's going to be a little red head (which is odd seeing as her dad and I both have dark hair....I blame my dad, who's ginger! )...she's got very fair skin and a little shock of auburn hair: I think she's going to be a real little english rose Another interesting fact we have discovered is that two Ellens equal

Official Mini-roo....

Yesterday we decided to go and get our little pumpkin (yup..she's still looking like she's had 25 pints of Sunny D, although it is definitely fading fast) registered, which entailed a trip back to St. Albans Register Office. The minute we get in the door we bump into the lady who married us who smiles and greets us, takes a minute or two to register the fact that we have car seat avec small person and does a barely hidden double take of shock!!! Upon being told said small person arrived 4 day

Sleeeeeeepppp....

Well after spending most of yesterday cat napping, little ellen finally decided to sleep last night for 3 hours each time before she wanted a feed, which gave me a chance to catch some proper zzzzzzzzz's. Mr Roo went into London today to pick up some work stuff for me, so I spent several hours this morning doing that which was rather nice: it's good to have something to take my mind off the worries and joys of being a mum: it's like my mum said.... every single thing to do with having a child is

Yukky....

well today I had the honour of being able to witness another nellie first: her umbilical cord stump falling off...and what a blurghy thing that was...but thank god it's gone, as everything looks so much dryer and nicer now without this bit of flesh hanging off her (sorry for the gory detail, but to a sleep deprived and baby bluesy mum like me, it really was not very nice at all!). Anyway, apart from that all is good in the land of Roo...the little scrapper still hasn't worked out that nighttime

Roo

The Pumpkin...

Well little nellie is one week old, and what a week it's been. She is such a contented and funny little baby and has a massive range of facial expressions to keep me and Mr Roo amused with. She also hasn't been told what she's supposed to do as a newborn, and has been able to hold her head up (very unnerving when she did it for the first few times) since she was two days old. She has also worked out that whatever is within grasp of her hands (she has really long fingers like her dad) can be pul

Piccies....

Well, here she is in all her glory....My very own little scrap of naughtiness, Miss Nellie the (very small) Elephant. She's still being utterly adorable (but then they all are aren't they?) and we even managed to get 6 hours sleep last night.Talk soonMummy Roo :o

She's Here!

just to let you know that Ellen Rose decided that she wasn't waiting till November and arrived yesterday at 2am after a 2 1/2 hour labour(waters broke 24 before...). She was born in a pool at the birth centre, although cos she's a scrap, we had to then go to hospital where she got the all clear. She's a tiny little scrap at 5lb 6oz, but is really healthy and placid (I get a feeling that won't last!). All 3 of us are doing grand, although we're all shattered! Will talk to you all very soon, once w

I Do....

Well today has been a very funny day....after much deliberation and procrastination (we've been living together for 9 years!) Mr Roo and myself decided to get married....This entailed convincing two friends that, no, we were not joking, that it would be a purely legal affair and that, yes, there would only be the four of us....So three weeks ago we approached the register office: slightly bemused lady who didn't quite know what to do when we told her we wanted the shortest service possible, woul

Boats And Sheds....

well as it was such a nice day, myself and Mr Roo decided to make the most of it, and after getting up at a silly time to watch the grand prix (not worth the effort) and reading the papers, we went for a walk and an ice cream (in October????!) in the park, which was rather nice as the trees were all turning gold and even though it was late afternoon, it was warm and pleasant...Also went to homebase to try to get a water butt and a compost bin but we only have a small garden, and the smallest siz

Partner's Class....

well on saturday, myself and Mr Roo went to our partner's antenatal class, which was great fun. There were three other couples, all of whom were a giggle, and apart from Mr Roo embarassing himself as per usual (when asked who would like to cut the cord, he says yes, to be told that it might be harder than he thought and could sometimes be a little 'chewy'...to which he replies: 'I thought I could use scissors'......oh the shame! :o ) it was a good afternoon spent having a laugh and l

Strange Day...

well today has been one of those days....have got a low level bug of some sort, so am feeling a little under the weather (more tired than anything else) so after lying in bed till my bladder could stand it no more (any girl who's ever had a sprog knows exactly what I mean), I got up and pootled about for a little doing not very much. Then at lunchtime had to go and see midwife (all is well....and she doesn't want to see me again for another three weeks, which is great). Then came home to find a ca

Malaria And Mini-roo

Well I haven't written about the swim for malaria for a bit, so I thought I'd bring you all up to speed....As of today they have around 200,000 people swimming all round the world, which is amazing! Swimmers range from a robot at MIT in the US to little mini-roo who will be doing a baby-triathlon..... :o Jonah Lomu is doing it, as is Grant Hackett and Michael Phelps amongst others...There are school kids, grannies, parents, students, you name it they've got it: it's fantastic to see so

Baby Stuff...

well I had my second Parent Craft class on monday, which was interesting. I also got to have a nose around the birth centre which was absolutely marvellous. It has five ensuite rooms, all decked out in peach and cream decor, with curtains, plants, TVs, etc....Although the place is obviously functional with lino floors, etc, it really felt very calm and relaxing and exactly the kind of non-medicalised place I want to give birth in. Mr Roo can stay in the room with me after the birth (they have sp

Monday, Monday....

Well it's that time of year again.....the first day of term at college....The whole place is teeming with nervous looking 18 year olds (and cocky looking 19 years olds who have miraculously forgotten what it was like to be a newbie far away from home, and are strutting their stuff and trying to look bohemian and worldly wise in the foyer of the building, even as we speak). It suddenly dawned on me today that it is 16 years since I first went to university: so that makes me officially old enough t

Hurricanes...and Friends.

well I finally managed to get hold of my friend Helena yesterday. She works as a geologist for Shell in Houston, and has been forced to evacuate. They were trying to convince them all to stay in their house until today, but Helena took one look at the huge electrical plant with all its huge electricity pylons close to her house, and decided that maybe it would be a good idea to get a long way away from them.Anyways, after spending 2 hours trying to get petrol and a further 8 hours trying to get

Baby.....

Well, it's now getting towards the final countdown for mini-Roo's appearance and so myself and Mr Roo thought it was about time we actually got our posteriors in gear and starting thinking about getting some baby things.....After spending 45 minutes in the country's largest Mothercare we both started to regret the decision.....I mean, how many different types of plastic bath and changing mat can you need for heaven's sake.... if it's plastic and does the job then who needs more??? I was amazed t

My Mum And Dad.....

I thought I'd write about my mum and dad in this blog, seeing as they've been down this weekend....Now my parents are a pair of stars: both had had their fair share of trauma through the years. Dad retired at 50 due to ill health and my mum has early onset osteo arthritis and as well as having a double hip replacement at 50, also got hit with the menopause and a breakdown all in the same year. Recently my poor dad has been suffering from a neurological complication of his original illness which
