Heading to Edinburgh#'s Hogmanay for the torchlight procession, fireworks, street party, garden concert, ceilidh or even the Dook on New Year's Day, the weather will improve.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay 3 day festival

Updated: 30th December 2015 16:43

The main event for New Year's Eve celebrations in Edinburgh are  the fireworks at midnight and Hogmanay Street party, but this evening (Weds 30th) sees the torchlight procession and New Year's Day brings the Dook in the Forth. Will #StormFrank ruin the celebrations - No way!

Torchlight procession Weds 30th Dec

It is currently blowing a hoolie in Scotland. The winds are forecast to ease this evening but it is still going to be windy with showers at 6:15pm which is when the organisers start to hand out the torches. (Check details about pre-booking). The Procession is due to set off at 7pm, and the queue does wind back a fair way through the city. Don't wear your best coat, embers do float about and with this breeze sparks will flit around. Keep an eye on @Edhogmanay for procession updates.

Netweather radar Weds afternoon, shows hefty, blustery showers to come, some already turning wintry over the hills

Hogmanay

The weather is improving, slowly. It won't be as windy tomorrow, and it won't rain all day. #StormFrank will be disappearing and there should be a lull from the very wet and very windy weather, but it is going to turn colder.Temperatures will drop from +6C down to +1C but it will feel more like -1C in the breeze by midnight. During the evening there will be more showers, so they come and they go. When one arrives, it will be cold, blustery, sleety but they should all be away before midnight, ready for some clear, dry weather for the bells and the midnight fireworks. There are 4 firework displays, at 9/10/11 and 12 o'clock, don't get confused.  It has been very mild over the past month, but New Year's Eve will be cold, with temperatures down near freezing. There will be frost and even ice outside the city if you are wandering home in the wee hours.

Many events are now sold out but there are still tickets for the Street Party. Check travel details here http://www.edinburghshogmanay.com/travel-info

New Year's Day

Been up really late, feeling a bit rough, what you need is a dip in the Forth. The traditional Dook, involves running into the water on New Year's Day. The main event is at South Queensferry but this is sold out, although there are other events all along the Forth. Low tide is around the middle of the day on the 1st. The Loony Dook starts at 2:30pm, check-in from 12:30. How's the water?

Yes, the North Sea has the coldest waters around the UK at this time of year, 8 to 9 Celsius, Brrr. The air will be cool too, maybe 4C, with a light south breeze. It should be dry and bright, so that will be cheery.

If you miss that or just couldn't get a place, then there is the Final Fling at the National Museum of Scotland 5-6:30pm. Nice and cosy inside for a ceilidh.
