A mixed weekend but still some warm sunshine

Video outlook for the weekend weather across the UK. Warm sunshine, low cloud off the North Sea and a few showers interrupting the fine weather.

The weekend weather for the UK will bring a lot of fine, bright or sunny spells. Temperatures into the high teens or low 20sC with light winds. It will feel cooler along North Sea coasts and there will be a good deal of low cloud overnight and for the early mornings. Like other days this week, there will be showers for a few parts of the UK with some heavy, even thundery downpours.

The jetstream has split with one portion way north close to Iceland and another arm stretching from the Pyrenees across the Alps to the Black Sea. The main weather action over mainland Europe has been centred around a low pressure. This has brought torrential downpours and flooding to northern Italy and Austria.

Germany red warning heavy rain

Germany has red rain warnings including Stuggart and Cologne. There are yellow and amber rain warnings for Belgium and Luxembourg with rain, flooding and thunderstorm warnings for NE France from Meteo France to end the week. Everything is rather steady and slow-moving, hence the high rainfall totals for central Europe.

There is a weak weather front trailing into NW Scotland with more cloud but during Friday night the warm front from the active continental low pressure will brush Kent with more cloud and outbreaks of rain. This will move eastwards along the English Channel with grey, damp weather along the south coast and a wet Saturday morning for the Channel Islands

It’s a mixed picture elsewhere with clear skies allowing warm sunshine and the temperatures to climb but other parts see a murky, grey start due to low cloud, inland, fog or the haar/seafret off the North Sea. There could be a few showery bits for eastern England into East Anglia on Saturday morning but these will be well scattered.  Many parts will brighten up with a scattering of showers breaking out by lunchtime onwards for southern Wales and the West Country where the focus for the heaviest downpours will be.

By late afternoon into early evening, there will be a few heavy showers dotted over southern Britain. They fade into the night as the low cloud filters inland on a NE flow.

Plenty of sunshine about on Sunday away from the low cloud and haar for northern Scotland and NE Britain along the coasts. Again a few showers for inland Highlands Scotland and a scattering of sharp showers from the Home Counties across to the tip of Cornwall but most places will miss those.

Overall, a lot of fine, warm weather this weekend just a bit cooler by night.
