Brief fine, warm spell once eastern rain clears

With a cool north wind, cloud and rain this Monday morning is a bit grim for July. This is the picture for eastern UK, further west it is bright and sunny and will warm up nicely.

Issued: 24th July 2017 08:32

Quite a mixed weekend, really wet for some, showers and brightness for others. 22.5 C for Hull on Saturday as Carlisle in the west saw over 50mm rain (2") and 22.7C in Co.Fermanagh on Sunday. Anyone watching The Open will have seen all sorts of weather and excitement, Fore! Great photo showing the mixed skies.

The low pressure which brought all the unsettled weather has been around since Friday and only now is fading away over the North Sea. Behind it we draw in cool air from the north before another weather system pushes in from the Atlantic for midweek. There will be some fine weather and warm sunshine briefly in-between the two, but it's not that great a picture if this is the first week of your summer hols.

Today

There is a north wind blowing, making it feel rather cold this morning, especially along North Sea coasts. The main area of rain is also over eastern England with lighter bits scattered over more of England. The cloud and dampness over central parts of Britain will ease and fade away to the east during Monday, resulting in a fine, bright day with warm sunshine. For eastern and SE England the cloud will linger with patchy light rain, which is a deterioration in the forecast, as more of a clearance eastwards was hoped for. The wind will keep things cooler and northern and north-eastern areas parts of Britain could keep low cloud along some coasts. However, further west and for Northern Ireland temperatures will rise into the low 20s. Under the damp cloud, temperatures will struggle and it will feel cold with the brisk wind.

Tuesday

By tomorrow the UK will be in a col, the slack area on synoptic charts in-between two lows and two high pressures. So, winds will mainly be light and the weather quiet. There will be the sunshine, so temperatures will rise into the 20s C with 23, 24 Celsius possible maybe 25C. First thing in the morning there will still be a moderate NW breeze over eastern England and more cloud with perhaps a bit of light rain. Still the remnants from that weekend low pressure – “Jog On!” Much of the UK will have a fine, sunny day, the eastern, grey damp weather should break up, and apart from the odd shower and some lurking coastal cloud, Tuesday looks pretty good.

By Wednesday morning there will be a brisk southerly wind. Frontal rain will sweep in over Northern Ireland, into western Britain with cloud ahead of it. Heavy and persistent rain will fall over Scotland, as the band works its way eastwards right across Wales and England too. Even with the wind and rain, it won’t feel cold over southern Britain as the warm sector moves through. The whole frontal system should move across the UK during the day, so clearing from Northern Ireland in the afternoon and reaching eastern Britain for the second part of the day. The occluding front will bring a wet night for Shetland as heavy showers whirl into NW Britain with the low centre nearby.

The winds then turn to the west, and it will be cooler Wednesday night so take note if you are camping. For Thursday, southern and eastern parts will see a lot of fair weather with sunny spells and temperatures in the high teens, low 20sC. Northern and western areas of the UK will have blustery winds and hefty showers rattling through from the west, with shorter bright spells. Some of the showers in the far NW could bring hail and thunder with strong winds around the coasts.

End of the week

Friday will be a diluted version of Thursday. The winds will ease off; there will still be showers, mainly in the NW but not as vigorous and more fine weather about too. The weekend looks to bring another low in from the Atlantic, but SE Britain could escape most of any blustery, wet weather and see more warm sunshine.
