Scattered thunderstorms wreaked havoc as they crawled over parts of the UK during Tuesday with incredible lightning shows and hefty downpours continuing through the night. A major incident was declared at Coverack in Cornwall as torrential rain set in for the Lizard peninsula on Tuesday afternoon and caused severe flooding.

The rain just continued for hours and began to flow down the main road towards the harbour. This water then became a torrent pulling rubble and boulders down the hillside. The gushing water and debris stranded cars, a bus of school children and divided the village in half. As homes and businesses began to flood, people had to be rescued by helicopter. The village was cut off as the roads were impassable and the emergency services continued their work.

As people struggled with the continuing influx of water, the submerged damaged to the streets and more water pouring off the harbour walls, warnings were issued to keep out of the flood waters.

Sizeable hail fell in the afternoon, adding to the drama.

Cornwall Council made a statement on Tuesday evening that there had been no casualties and that there would be a meeting for local residents in Coverack at 11.30 am Weds at Paris Hotel to provide help and support.

Further thunderstorms moved up from the English Channel overnight with one vortex moving through Berkshire, Bedfordshire and Herts. as lines of thundery showers headed into the south coast. Many areas missed the storms, but for others it has been a noisy, lively night.
