Lots of sunshine today, but some forecasting headaches coming up

It's a relatively straightforward weather situation today and will remain so over Scotland but elsewhere, meandering Atlantic systems seem set to cause a few forecasting headaches over the next few days. While not entirely settled, it should be largely OK however for the start of the Wimbledon Championships tomorrow, with the weather today in many ways similar to that of yesterday.

Once residual cloud and patchy rain have cleared from the South East, most parts today will be dry and bright. There'll be variable cloud this morning but sunny spells as well especially over England and Wales, leading to an agreeable and pleasantly warm Sunday afternoon. Apart from the odd shower mostly in the North, Northern Ireland will also be mostly dry and bright, before it tends to cloud over from the West through the afternoon.

The exception will be Scotland, where there'll be showers some heavy in the North and West. Towards Dumfries, Fife, Lothian and The Borders, however, there'll be fewer showers and more in the way of sunny intervals. A West or South West wind will be moderate or fresh, locally strong in North and across the Northern Isles, but lighter over England and Wales. Temperatures in the North will get no higher than 14 to 16C, but elsewhere a warmer 18 to 22C is more likely, with 23 or 24C possible in sheltered parts of the East and South where you see the best of the sunshine.

Temperatures this afternoon
Many central and eastern areas should see further sunny intervals into the evening, but cloud amounts will increase from the West especially after dark. This could bring some patchy light rain or drizzle overnight, but most of the South East, East Anglia and districts towards the coast should stay dry until morning. Elsewhere cloud will give mostly light rain or drizzle, with a few heavier bursts in the North and West. This could make it misty at times over coasts and hills exposed to a mostly moderate South Westerly wind, that'll be fresh across North and West Scotland. By morning, the weather should have cleared from Northern Ireland and most of Scotland in a mild night everywhere, when temperatures shouldn't fall below 11 to 16C.

Monday sees the working week beginning cloudy over most of England and Wales. It'll also be misty towards some South and West-facing coasts at first with patchy mostly light rain or drizzle.

Cloudy over England and Wales on Monday morning
Through the morning, Wales, the Midlands and northern England become brighter with some sunshine, this spreading to East Anglia and the South East during the afternoon, with perhaps a brief shower at Wimbledon beforehand. Apart from the odd shower in the North, Monday over Scotland and Northern Ireland will be mainly dry with sunny spells. Winds'll be mostly light or moderate South West or Westerly, with top temperatures 15 to 18C in the North and 19 to 22C towards the South East.

Temperatures Monday afternoon
Apart from the odd shower in the North at first, Scotland, most of Northern Ireland and northern England will have a dry evening and night, with further sunshine to end the day in most places. Clear spells and light winds may allow a few mist patches to form in rural areas towards dawn, but they'll be short lived. North Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia may also see some sunshine before dusk, but cloud across the Channel Islands will move back into the South and much of Wales. This'll make it misty after dark in a mostly light South Westerly breeze, with some patchy mostly light rain or drizzle. It'll be a mild night though, particularly so in the South where temperatures may not fall below a rather warm and somewhat humid 16 or 17C, but elsewhere it'll be fresher minimum values nearer to 11 to 14C.
