Cool & Blustery For Now, Warmer Mid-Week

Saturday saw a split in weather fortunes. Northern and western areas saw cloudy skies and heavy rain – with over an inch of rain falling in places, while southern and eastern England saw warm sunshine, with the temperature reaching close to 25C in East Anglia.

Like Saturday, Sunday will be another windy day, there will be some sunny spells for northern and western areas today but also some heavy and blustery showers, drier with sunny spells towards the southeast. Cooling off today and Monday, with more showers for the north tomorrow, but the warmth will return across England and Wales by mid-week, as the jet stream shifts north and high pressure builds across the south, with showers or rain becoming confined to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Today

For now, it’s a been a cloudy start to Sunday for some, though some are starting bright or sunny. A weak cold front bringing cloudy skies to SE England and East Anglia will gradually clear to brighter skies with sunny spells already across the West Country, Midlands, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. So much of England away from the northwest should stay dry and bright with sunny spells today, though like yesterday it will be windy again.

Already there’s been heavy showers from the word go across Scotland and Northern Ireland, thanks to a deep area of low pressure to the west of Scotland. These showers continuing for much of the day, locally heavy with hail and thunder towards the west. There will be occasional sunny spells between the showers, but it will be rather cloudy at times across the west. Showers at times across NW England, Wales and SW England too today, though perhaps less frequent and heavy as further north, again some sunny spells between the showers, though rather cloudy at times towards western coasts.

A windy day, especially towards the northwest, where there will be southwesterly gales over western and northern coasts and hills. Temperatures reaching 15-17C across Scotland and Northern Ireland, 16-19C across much of England and Wales, though across SE England and East Anglia we could see 21-22C.

Tonight

Then a windy night to come, more especially in the north – where blustery showers or longer spells of rain will continue. Southern England, Midlands and Wales mostly dry with clear spells, though a few showers possible in the west. Temperatures dipping to around 11-13C.

Monday

A windy start on Monday across the north, perhaps gusts of 40-50mph through the central belt of Scotland for the morning rush hour – which could bring some travel disruption. Showers too to start the day across Scotland – frequent towards the west, with showers on and off through much of the day, though tending to ease later in the day. Some showers across northern England too, especially through the morning, but for much of England and Wales it will be mostly dry with bright or sunny spells, perhaps a few well scattered showers towards the west. Temperatures reaching 15-18C generally, perhaps 19-20C in the southeast.

Tuesday

A ridge of high pressure building in on Tuesday across the south will mean much of England and Wales will stay dry and fine with sunny spells, some showers perhaps across northern England though. Breezy with scattered showers across Scotland and N. Ireland, most frequent across the north and west.

Wednesday

Mostly dry, warm and sunny across England and Wales on Wednesday, with high pressure in control, temperatures reaching the low to mid-twenties across central and eastern areas. Bright or sunny across southern and eastern Scotland, northern and western Scotland along with N. Ireland cloudier and breezier with a risk of some rain.

Thursday & Friday

Perhaps a few thundery showers at first across the far southeast on Thursday, otherwise turning cooler and breezier from the west, mostly dry and bright across central, southern and eastern areas – showers for northern and western areas. Friday breezy across all areas, mostly dry and bright for England and Wales, as high pressure re-builds, cloudier with some showers for Scotland and N. Ireland.
