Sunshine & Showers This Weekend, Unsettled Next Week

Updated: 3rd June 2017 07:53

The end of the week saw a real mix bag of weather across the UK, some finishing the Friday on a dry and sunny note, some cloudy with rain and across parts of SE England and East Anglia – thunderstorms brought frequent lightning, torrential rain and even some hail stones an inch in diameter.

Friday's weather:

The hot and humid conditions, reaching 27C, which fuelled the thunderstorms across SE Britain yesterday has been swept east onto the near continent overnight, as a cold front cleared the east coast recently. So, we will see fresher conditions across all parts this weekend, with plenty of sunshine offer, but also be prepared for some showers too, especially across the north and west.

Today

For now, it’s a cloudy start across eastern England and eastern Scotland - with some showers across north Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and coastal areas of the Yorkshire Ridings. Further west, it’s a brighter story across SW England, Wales, NW England, Scotland and N. Ireland with a sunny start – though with some showers near western coasts. Through the rest of the morning and into the afternoon – it will brighten up and dry up across eastern England, with much of England and Wales enjoying plenty of sunshine, though there will be well scattered showers passing through across western areas, with a few reaching the east. Scotland and Northern Ireland seeing frequent showers push in from the west and develop this morning and through the afternoon, some of which will be locally heavy with the odd rumble of thunder.

Temperatures reaching 16-18C across northern and western areas, 19-21C across central and eastern England, perhaps 22C in London. A fresh southwesterly breeze, strongest across western coasts.

Tonight

Then this evening and overnight, a few showers filtering eastwards across England and Wales, but most places staying dry with clear spells and turning compared to recent nights, especially across rural areas. Further showers across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Chilly in rural areas tonight

Sunday

Sunday again sees a lot of dry and bright weather across central and eastern areas of England, occasional showers across SW England, Wales and NW England, with sunshine in between. Scotland and Northern Ireland seeing more frequent showers again, perhaps with thunder. Temperatures reaching 15-18C generally, perhaps 20C in London.

Next week

Increasingly unsettled as we enter next week, with a deepening area of low pressure arriving across SW Britain later on Monday bringing persistent heavy rain and strong winds to western and northern areas by evening, perhaps staying dry across SE England and East Anglia. Wet and windy conditions, with gales locally, only slowly clearing northern and eastern areas on Tuesday to brighter conditions with showers from the west. After perhaps a dry and bright start on Wednesday, more cloud and rain arriving later in the day. Further showers or longer spells of rain to come on Thursday and Friday, as areas of low pressure move off the Atlantic, breezy at times too, but pleasant in any sunny spells.

An unsettled week ahead
