An Up And Down Sort Of Weekend

After the heavy showers of yesterday, today although still unsettled sees somewhat of an improvement, particularly in the South and East.

Issued: 13th May 2017 08:56

After the heavy showers of yesterday, today although still unsettled sees somewhat of an improvement, particularly in the South and East. It'll also feel less humid, but with winds in a southerly quarter, temperatures generally will continue to be above average.

North West England is waking to showery bursts of rain this morning some heavy, that'll also affect Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland at first and particularly West Scotland later where some thunder is possible by early afternoon. Elsewhere the showers are more scattered and mainly towards Anglesey and across the South East.

These will tend to fade, before becoming mostly confined to the North and West of Scotland through the second half of the day. Central and eastern areas, in particular, will see some sunshine but with increasing cloud over Wales and the West Country by the afternoon, as further Atlantic systems approach from the South West. They'll bring rain to the Isles of Scilly around midday, this steadily spreading North and East through the afternoon to reach Northern Ireland and other more western parts towards evening.

Rainfall animation
It'll be a misty morning across the Northern Isles, around the Moray Firth and along North Sea coasts of Scotland, but a veer of the wind should eventually clear this from most parts. Elsewhere a southerly breeze may tend to freshen a little through the afternoon. Despite this most places will become very mild or rather warm, with top temperatures 13 to 15C in the North and West and 17 to 19C in the East and South.

It'll be a dry evening in the East, but with increasing cloud. Rain will follow overnight but only for a short while, with amounts in the South quite small and of little value to the farmers needing rain. There'll be some heavy bursts though across Northern Ireland, Cumbria and the North and West of Scotland this evening making it misty for a while. The rain will then clear most parts by morning leaving just a few showers in the West. A moderate or fresh southerly wind will veer South West with the arrival of the clearer weather in a mild night generally, with lowest temperatures 7 to 11C.

Sunday sees residual cloud and rain across North East Scotland and towards the East coast soon clearing into the North Sea to leave a day of sunny intervals and scattered showers. The best of the sunshine will be in the East and South where there'll be fewer showers. But over North West England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, the showers will be heavy in places perhaps with local thunder. Winds will be moderate locally fresh South West to South, before decreasing in eastern parts towards evening. Despite a fresher feel it'll become rather warm in the East and South where 17 to 19C should be reached again. With 12 to 15C probably 'near the mark' in the North and West.

Temperatures on Sunday
Remaining showers will fade into the evening, with much of Scotland and central and eastern parts, in particular, seeing further sunshine to end the day. A dry night will follow but with increasing cloud that'll eventually bring some rain to Northern Ireland, Wales and the South West, as more Atlantic systems approach. Light winds will freshen from the South in the West later, with temperatures on the whole not falling below 6 to 10C.

As we enter the working week, there'll be further rain at times in the North West. The East and South will see fewer showers with a summery, humid, very warm interval towards mid-week perhaps followed by thunder before it turns somewhat cooler and fresher from the West later in the week.
