Chilly In the East, While West Is Best

West again best for sunshine and warmth today. The weather stays dry into next week, but change may be on the way by the end of the week.

Issued: 7th May 2017 08:59

It’s a dry, chilly start to Sunday for many areas, although temperatures are on the rise now, with some sunshine breaking through. As the recent satellite imagery shows, there is some cloud, especially across central, southern and eastern areas. But after yesterday’s wet weather it is a much-improved start to the day across SW England.

Through the remainder of Sunday, there will continue to be some distinct variations in the weather though across the UK. Given a N or NE’ly breeze, cloudier and quite chilly conditions are expected across parts of northern and eastern Scotland. Similar conditions are also likely in many eastern areas of England, but especially regions near to the North Sea. The best of the weather today though will be reserved for southern and mainly western areas. With plenty of sunshine, and it will be pleasantly warm as well.

The variation in temperatures across the UK will be particularly pronounced today. The further north and east you are, especially if you’re near to the North Sea, temperatures will be several degrees lower than further south and west. The highest temperatures will be in those areas where the sunshine is most prolonged this afternoon, so across parts of the Midlands, S England, Wales, parts of NW England and especially across Ireland. Across these regions, 16C to 18C can be expected quite widely, perhaps nearing 20C locally. In contrast though, for parts of the north and east temperatures may struggle to just 8C or 9C.

Looking further ahead, into the new working week and the fine and settled weather will continue. There is high confidence to suggest that dry weather will prevail across much of the British Isles for most of the week. However, there are increasing signs of change, from the south, by the end of Thursday and then more particularly into Friday. Before that, Monday through to Wednesday will produce a mixture sunshine and variable cloud by day, while cloud breaks by night will lead to some chilly nights. Our medium range weather model highlights the continued dry and settled weather in the coming days, even up to and including Wednesday.

Temperatures will be near or slightly below average, but with some continued regional variations. However, with some sunshine and light winds, then many inland areas of the UK will experience some very pleasant conditions at times. With temperatures widely reaching 14C to 16C, if not a few degrees higher in places.

The change to more unsettled conditions, along with the first widespread risk of rain and showers for some time, will likely arrive late on Thursday. Into Friday, the current thinking is that an area of low pressure, along with associated weather fronts, will move northwards across most regions, but initially across England and Wales. There are uncertainties over the details for now, though.

By the time we get to the end of the week, for some areas of the UK, it will have been some weeks since any measurable rainfall. So, from an agricultural point of view at least, the change will be welcomed. As ever we’ll keep you up-to-date here at Netweather in the coming days.
