Windy today, low pressure for south on Monday

A rather mixed bag for the next two days with blustery winds across the UK and bands of rain mainly for the southern half of the UK. Sunshine inbetween!

There is going to be some rain for the Bank Holiday, and most of it will be over southern Britain. Northern UK will be drier over the next two days but still with a few showery bits reaching into central and southern Scotland.

Forecast rainfall totals next two days:

You may have already noticed it is a blustery day. The fresh SE winds continue through today, making it feel a bit cooler than you may like if you have outdoor plans. The winds shift rather by Monday, with still a cool wind off the North Sea, but lighter winds for western shores. Also, the circulation around the low pressure moving over southern Britain will bring light/calm conditions for a time, but with strong gusts through the English Channel and for SW Britain.

More detail

Rain has already arrived from a cold front which is part of a low pressure near to SW Eire.

Ahead of this are the brisk SE winds but the flow of air is from a warmer source so out of the wind, in the sunshine it will feel pleasant. In the rain band or behind the front, temperatures will fall, so a bit more of a chill in the air later today for Cornwall and Devon.

This rain band seems to pivot slightly, pushing rain over SW England and into Wales, with outbreaks spilling over southern England and the West Country this afternoon. A few bits fo rain could reach the far south of Northern Ireland later on today. Ahead of the frontal band, there will be bright or sunny spells with the brisk wind. Temperatures could reach 17 or 18C around Gt. London, with low to mid teens elsewhere.

Tonight

There will be more wet weather for SW England, with heavy and persistent rain, Added to that strong and gusty winds. There will be outbreaks of rain into Northern IRlealnd over Wales and southern England. A bit hit and miss but still not perfect weather if you are away camping. It is a Bank holiday weekend.

Bank Holiday Monday

There will be some warmth about, mainly for western Britain and Northern Ireland. Temperatures will reach into the high teens, and out of the breeze in the sunshine, it will feel lovely. However, this is not the case for everyone. The low pressure centre over southern Britain will bring more cloud and outbreaks of showery rain to England and Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland look to have a fair day with lovely conditions for the west coast of Scotland.

For southern Britain, it will be a day of hefty showers and brisk cool winds, alongside bright or sunny spells which don't last. As the day progresses, there will be fewer showers and more areas seeing longer periods of fine weather with the gusty winds confined to the coasts and Thames Estuary. Inland under the centre of the low, winds will be light, and as always with showers, some parts will get lots and others hardly any rain. Keep an eye on the radar.

Outlook

For the rest of the working week, there are some hints of May warmth, with temperatures in the mid-teens and warm sunshine. The sunshine is strong at this time of year so remember your sunscreen. There will still be a chill by night, even touches of frost for northern Britain. It seems that cooler air will flow in by Friday, so the temperatures fall back to the low teens for many.

Tuesday looks fine for many, but the easterly flow off the North Sea will bring low cloud and outbreaks of rain to eastern England with some heavier bursts by the afternoon. These showers could be pushed well inland on the brisk winds, so for the Midlands, even Powys, heading over southern Britain later in the day.  Southern and western UK will be quite warm at 15 to maybe 18C with sunny spells and a moderate east wind. The rest of Britain will see more cloud, bits of sunshine but a cooler brisk east wind and temperatures of 10 to 14C

Wednesday brings a cool NE wind with the risk of outbreaks of rain into SE Britain. Elsewhere looks fair and bright with a similar picture on Thursday. It’s a shame about the nippy wind.

If you have got tomorrow off, enjoy your long weekend.
