Cool April continues at a steady pace

it's still chilly out there, even when you weaken after a glance out of the window and see sunshine. Then realise outside that you do need your coat. Not bad if you are still on Easter hols but could be warmer

The air is still cold, even with fine sunshine, it really is quite chilly out there. And it is going to stay that way. Colder air will filter down from the north by the end of the weekend right through next week. Hold off on the summer clothes.

We have a bit of frost about this morning. I did remember to bring my little plants back in last night, tripping about in the near dark. Suffolk has been down to -4C in the past few hours with clear skies and now sunshine over the SE half of the UK. There is more cloud toppling in from the NW as frontal systems collapse over the top of a high pressure which is bringing settled conditions. Overall, there will be a lot of dry weather, but this frontal band will introduce damp conditions today with patchy light rain at most. Around the Irish Sea and North Channel, for NW England and the Borders. More patchy rain will affect Northern Ireland today and move into western Scotland and across the Irish Sea, so grey and damp here. Anglesey, Cumbria and Lancs will all feel cold with more of an SW wind today. For most, it will be cool with light winds and temperatures of 9 to 12C. A few brighter spots might reach 13 or 14C, but it’s essentially not that warm.

This evening patchy rain spills over north Wales and Merseyside, Peak District as more rain arrives in the far NW of Britain. SE Britain stays dry and clear and so will again see temperatures fall away and the risk of a touch of frost.

Tomorrow

Through Thursday the high pressure in the south tries to cling on but several cold fronts push down from the north. Real progress is stalled until early Saturday but there will be more cloud and dampness about with a westerly wind. Sheltered spots will get sunny spells and here temperatures could reach 14 or 15C. So, it will be another settled day, breezing in the far north with a lot of fair, bright weather although again damp for western areas.

Friday

The cold fronts will bring cloud and rain to the northern half of Scotland but ahead of that there should be fine even sunny weather for much of Northern Ireland, England and wales. There will be more cloud and damp weather clinging to NW England, W. Scotland, maybe north Wales but in the sunnier spots it will feel less cold. England could see 14 to 18C, so a bit of spring warmth if this is your Easter holiday week. The high pressure will keep a lot of settled, dry weather over the UK but there will be a brisk cool NW wind over Scotland and northern England as the band of patchy rain sinks down over southern Scotland, just into Northern Ireland and northern England by Friday evening. Scotland will see a frost behind the cold front with clear skies into Saturday.Cool April

Weekend

The high pressure tries to hold on, bringing a lot of fair, settled weather. It’s not completely dry, again with patchy light rain from some thicker cloud but not amounting to much. Overall, it’s okay, not bad although there could be rain in the far north of Scotland by Sunday as it becomes blustery.

Saturday sees a light north wind and will feel cool, Sunday could have more of a SW breeze and feel a bit better.

Next week

It looks like there will be a plunge of colder Arctic air right through the UK, so a higher chance of frost and a real nip in the air by day. Still with some pleasant sunshine but keep your jumper on as the breeze and in the shade, will be chilly.
