Mixed Easter Weekend - Cool, Some Sun & Rain

Good Friday saw a rather cloudy day with some rain in places. Saturday will be on the cooler side – bright in the south and east with showers in the north and northwest. Easter Sunday will be cool again and see rain move southeast across most parts, followed by sunshine and showers in the north. Easter Monday is looking brighter but with showers and feeling cold in the northerly wind. So, all-in-all, a rather cool and mixed picture this weekend, some rain and some sunshine, but hardly spring-like.

Today

For now, it’s windy in the north with a peppering of showers from the word across northern and western Scotland, Northern Ireland and a few getting through across NW England, Wales and far SW of England. Showers falling as snow over Scottish mountains. But there are some sunny spells between the showers and across much of central, northern and eastern Britain it’s a bright or sunny start with the sunshine towards the east.

There is more in the way of the cloud across southern England this morning though, thanks to a cold front clearing south here. But it will brighten up here to join central and eastern areas of England to a largely dry and sunny day. Scotland, Northern Ireland and NW England will see further showers blowing through on a cool northwesterly wind, falling as hail towards western coasts and even as sleet and snow over the Scottish mountains, where there will be gales and a wind chill too for those venturing up there. A few showers across Wales and SW England, but many here escaping with a dry day.

Temperatures rather disappointing today, reaching 9-10C across Scotland, 10-13C across Northern Ireland, England and Wales, perhaps 14C in London.

Tonight

During Saturday night, a weather system will move in from the northwest bringing outbreaks of rain and hill snow to Northern Ireland and eventually western Scotland and Cumbria by dawn. Northeast Scotland will see some wintry showers, otherwise much of England and Wales and SE Scotland should stay dry and will turn chilly where skies clear.

Easter Sunday

Sunday turns cloudy from the northwest after perhaps a bright start across eastern England, as outbreaks of rain and hill snow across the northwest first thing spread southeast. Much of England and Wales seeing outbreaks of rain, though some uncertainty over southern extent, SW England may escape the rain and stay fine. After morning rain and hill snow, brightening up across Scotland and N. Ireland, though with some scattered showers. Temperatures reaching 9-13C generally, perhaps 15C across the southeast.

Easter Monday

Rain clearing away southeast tomorrow evening, followed by some showers for a time, then skies clearing to bring a cold night, with a touch of frost across central and northern areas. So a cold start to Easter Monday, but it will be a much brighter day but with a scattering of showers towards eastern areas where there’ll be brisk northerly wind. So not feeling particularly warm towards the east coast – where temperatures may stay in single figures, otherwise 10-12C, perhaps 14C in the southeast.

Rest of next week

A cold night to come Monday night, with a widespread frost likely as skies clear. High pressure builds in from the west on Tuesday and Wednesday, so becoming fine and dry both days though still on the cool side with temperatures reaching low double figures at best by day and turning cold with a risk of frost at night. Perhaps some cloud and rain affecting the north of Scotland by Wednesday. The rest of the week is looking to stay dry and settled, though could be cloudy at times, with risk of frost overnight. Cloud and rain may affect the far north at times.
