7 day European synoptic overview

Upper trough slides east from the Atlantic across western Europe this weekend, as it tries to edge further east - it disrupts into a cut-off upper low, as it encounters ridge across SE and E Europe. Showers and thunderstorms will affect UK, Low Countries, Germany, northern Spain and NW Italy to start the weekend, the showers and thunderstorms spreading further east across central Europe and Italy on Sunday, while turning drier across UK and most of Iberia as high pressure builds.

A cut-off low forms over Tyrrhenian Sea and Italy by Monday, before this low moves east into the Balkans and SE Europe by the middle of next week and eventually merges with trough extending south from  Scandinavia from mid-week – so further showers or thunderstorms across Italy and the Alps and developing further east into SE Europe too on Monday and Tuesday. Mid-week onwards to the weekend sees much of the eastern half of Europe form Scandinavia all the way down into the Alps, Italy and SE Europe becoming unsettled and cool, with northerly winds and showers developing by day, showers for the Alps and Italy should ease by Friday though.

Meanwhile, an upper ridge builds in from the west across western Europe by Monday and will persist through much of next week – bringing mostly fine and settled conditions to UK, France and Iberia. These drier conditions eventually spreading further east across the Low Counties, Germany and the western Alps too.
