Weekend Weather - windy, wet and wintry

The worst of the stormy conditions look set to hit France over the next day or so. However, the UK will see cold, windy and wet weather too

This weekend there is going to be some miserable weather about.  More strong winds, it was windy enough during Thursday night for Northern Ireland and northern Britain. Heavy rain particularly for western Britain and eastern counties of Northern Ireland. So sleet, a bit of hill snow, frost and icy patches as cold air moves in.

However, it is early February, we should be expecting much in the weather stakes and actually, we see to be escaping the worst of the weather this weekend as a succession of Atlantic lows bombard France.

There have been warnings out all week that February would be more unsettled and windy as our weather bustles in from the west, after the rather sedate start to 2017. Far too many newspapers and websites took it upon themselves to bandy about the name Storm Doris, this being the next name in the Met Office/Met Eireann Name our Storms process. A storm gets named when its impacts will be such that the Met Office issue an Amber warning for severe weather.

We have had a Yellow warning for strong winds and potential severe gales out all week focusing on Friday. This highlighted the potential for stormy weather well in advance, yet closer to the event it seems that western and northern France will bear the brunt of the stormy weather. Meteo France have issued high level warnings for violent winds.

There is also a Yellow rain warning out for Co.Down and Co.Antrim into Co. Armagh. Wet conditions will continue to push northwards through Friday evening with sleet mixed in and early Saturday into Scotland with hill snow. Northern Scotland stays wintry on Saturday with a lull elsewhere before hefty showers arrive from the SW and again could include wintry bits. Ice will be a problem as temperatures fall and surfaces will be wet.

Sunday's low pressure also looks less likely to impact on the UK, with the worst of the winds again hitting western France.

For Monday, a larger area of low pressure heads up through the Atlantic and brings a widespread windy day. It looks like it could have been a lot worse, but it still will be a blustery few days, wet, windy even wintry for some.
