Murky Sunday, Staying Mild, For Now....

High pressure to the south of Britain keeps the weather quiet for much of today, but rain will move southeast during Monday. The weather stays on the mild side through the first part of the week, turning colder later though.

Issued: 8th January 2017 10:21

High pressure centred just to the South of Britain continues to dominate keeping the weather in a quiet mood, but with generally large amounts of cloud. There’s a good deal of mist, murk and patchy fog this morning that's freezing in the Vale of York but with the air on the whole quite mild, there shouldn’t be a need for the de-icer in most parts first thing. By tomorrow fresher winds clear away the murk, with a cold front bringing rain from the West.

HIgh pressure over the south of the UK

Where skies have broken during the night, there's patchy thick fog this morning, particularly across Wiltshire, the Midlands and over some eastern parts of England. For many though it’ll be misty and murky but relatively mild, with patchy fog mostly on hills lifting only slowly in a grey, bland day. Apart from a little drizzle here and there mostly at first and over Northern Ireland it'll be a mainly dry day, the exception being West Scotland where some heavier bursts of rain may come along later as a front approaches from the West.

Although mostly cloudy today with limited brightness, some sheltered places to the lee of the Welsh mountains and across the East of Scotland and England will see a little winter sunshine. This could make the early afternoon briefly quite pleasant in just a gentle South Westerly breeze that'll freshen somewhat across Ireland and the West of Scotland later, with top temperatures 8 to 11C.

There could be broken skies in the East this evening allowing patchy fog to form again, with most of England and Wales having another misty night. Apart from a little drizzle here and there though it’ll continue mainly dry although later, North West England and the far West may begin to see a change as a southerly wind freshens. This’ll be ahead of a cold front that’ll be bringing stronger winds and rain too much of Northern Ireland and Scotland by morning. It’ll be another mild night, though, with temperatures unlikely to fall below 5 to 8C.

It may start grey and murky towards the South East on Monday, but this’ll soon be blown away as the wind freshens bringing a change. Outbreaks of rain clear Scotland and Northern Ireland through the morning, with sunny intervals and scattered blustery showers following on by the afternoon. These will be most frequent in the West turning wintry later on hills as it becomes colder, where some will be heavy and lengthy in a fresh or strong South West wind that’ll give gale or severe gale force gusts over exposed coasts and hills.

Across England and Wales Monday, it begins mainly dry towards the South East, but all parts eventually see a spell of rain as a cold front moves in from the West. The rain will be heavy in the North and West and as the front passes, but amounts in the South may be quite small.

Rain moving southeast on Monday
Following on behind will be sunny spells and a few showers these mostly in the West, but it may be towards dusk before the South East sees a clearance. A fresh and blustery wind will become South Westerly, with temperatures 5 to 7C in the North and 8 to 11C in the South.

After dark eastern areas see clear spells but although decreasing a little, a West or South West wind continues to bring blustery showers particularly to the West and North and over Scotland where they'll be wintry, with hill snow. It'll be a colder night with a slight frost in some Scottish glens and over more sheltered eastern parts of England, with lowest temperatures –1 to +4C.

The further outlook sees a wintry spell later in the week that'll give the first snow of the winter in some northern and eastern areas. It'll probably last no more than a couple of days with much milder air returning later in the weekend, although there is model disagreement on this at present.
