If you're one of the many heading to the mountains for some skiing or snowboarding during the half term break, then you're in for a treat with some fantastic snow conditions to enjoy.

After what was a slow start to the season, with a difficult Christmas for many resorts, winter has slowly kicked into gear during January, with the last week bringing some sizeable falls. This week, with high pressure on the scene, it's been a more settled picture and with cloud breaking, bringing some spectacular bluebird days to enjoy on the slopes.

Into the weekend, as the half-term holidays begin there is likely to be some snow affecting the Alps - so bear this in mind as you're planning your journey. There's some uncertainty at the moment, so it's definitely a case of staying tuned to the latest forecasts during the coming days, but a decent dump of snow above 1000 metres in some parts of the Alps does look likely.

Looking beyond, things are set to settle down again, so good opportunity to enjoy any fresh snow under some sunny skies during half-tern week, with high pressure building, as shown on the latest ECM model update:

Scotland

For Scotland, snow conditions are also great, with all the resorts reporting good snow coverage and a virtual full house of runs opens - photos from Cairngorm today:

The current settled spell is going to begin to break during the weekend, to bring the potential for some some more falls of snow through. As with the Alps there's a lot of uncertainty in the forecast from the latter part of this week onwards, with the current expectation being that it will be a little more unsettled at times during half term week, so the risk of further snow but also the threat of some high winds at times.
