Ah, Spring in the Alps - is there a better time to be skiing or snowboarding? Especially now the holidays are over.

Spring In The Alps - Even The Mannequins Are Hitting The Slopes

Spring in the Alps, a great time to ski or snowboard with sunshine, soft snow and often amazing conditions and this week has all of that. In France, the worlds longest half term break is now at an end, so those heading out to the slopes will find much emptier pistes and virtually no queues most days between now and the end of the season too.
In Morzine, even the mannequins in the snowboarding shop have been getting in on the action and heading up the slopes.
Of course with the mild few weeks, snow depths have begun to fall away from their highs during February, but the upper slopes at many resorts are still plenty above 2 metres, lower down it can be a bit more sketchy but even still the majority of resorts are reporting complete runs right down to the base.

Through this week, it's another mostly dry one - we have some snow in the far east of the Alps this weekend, so places like Kitzbuhel in Austria getting a bit of a top up. Another weakish front moves through midweek as well which may bring some light snow quite widely for a very short period, but it's again the east which is most likely to see more than just a sprinkle with the rain/snow line at around the 1400-1500 metre mark as it moves through later on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

It's into the weekend and the first part of next week that we're expecting to see some more significant changes as the high pressure which has bought this extended dry, mild period finally getting squeezed away from the northwest. It may take some time to get the freezing level down further east, so rain to fairly high levels possible here initially but current forecast model projections suggest that even here the freezing level will eventually fall away closer to 1000m.

Obviously we're a little way off so time for change to this, but a change of pattern to a more disturbed one with further snowfall does look likely as we head into the late part of this month.

So if you're heading out to the slopes, there's another week with plenty of sunshine to come then we're expecing some good falls of snow to move through so great opportunity to enjoy some fresh powder, emptier slopes, and some bluebird days in between any periods of snow which come through. What better time to be on the mountain!
