Cooler Week In The Alps - Snow On The Way Too

After a mild week in the Alps, it's going to cool down into the upcoming week with snow on the cards as well.

It's been a mild week in many parts of the Alps, with temperatures reaching 10c in some resorts, this obviously hasn't done marvels for the snow cover, especially at lower levels but with the heavy snow which moved through last weekend (Avoriaz saw 40cm) higher levels are still looking very good with most resorts reporting 1 metre plus.

Lower down it's a bit more patchy, Les Gets this week was starting to look a bit brown on parts of some pistes but even so, most trails are open although conditions are a little icy in places. Remember too it's still early January, so early days in the season yet and plenty of time for getting that base built up. Across the pond, the cold has released it's grip on North America over the last few days, but that doesn't mean there's a lack of snow - Whistler has seen 49cm during the last 24 hours so powder heaven there (again!), and Mt Batchelor in Oregon sits on top of the recent dump league with a very healthy 84cm's.

Looking ahead to this week, the very mild weather in the Alps will come to an end, it's not looking likely to be especially cold at any point (although the east may turn colder later on) but snow is on the agenda - especially from around 1000m upward from Monday through to Wednesday as front moves east. After that it settles for 24 hours or so, but with a fairly disturbed pattern likely over the next 7-10 days or so at least, there should be plenty more opportunity for snow.
