A friend of mine has just returned from a trip to Manchester, laughing at the headlines in the Manchester Evening News
Revealed: Britain's wettest cities - and Manchester barely makes the top 10
It was probably raining whilst the paper was being read, going all soggy. According to Met Office statistics in nearly 30 years 1981 til 2010, Cardiff receives the most rain, Glasgow the second, and Manchester is eighth in terms of rainfall totals. With just over 151 days of rain, on average a year, that's only 2/5ths, more dry days than wet.
In the UK you expect western areas to be wetter than the east with our prevailing SW winds. This week it has been NW and W.Scotland seeing the most rain with heavy rain every day, which looks like continuing into the new week. The Highlands of Scotland can cope with a lot of rain but this wet spell is beginning to take its toll.
Each day this week the Netweather 24 hour rainfall total charts have looked similar to the image above. Red into pink colours showing 30 to 60mm, or higher which is a couple of inches. The tides will be quite high this weekend and with the strong SW winds blowing extra water onto the West coast of Scotland, through the Minch. There are coastal flooding concerns, as all the water from the high ground flows out as well. SEPA have more details, once flooding starts. More heavy rain is forecast for Monday, not as heavy from Tuesday.
For Manchester, the weekend is looking good, bright with sunny spells and getting warmer up to 17C, so enjoy those other 214 dry days. Forecast here
