Video: A look back at Autumn 2019 and how the first week of December is shaping up

Jo Farrow looks back at the weather across the Autumn and looks ahead to the change from settled, chilly conditions to something wetter, windier and milder during the remainder of this week.

Usually, the UK sees most of its rain for NW Britain and Northern Ireland with eastern Britain being more sheltered. Autumn 2019 and particularly November has been very wet for the Midlands and eastern England, also SW and NE England. You can see the dark blue colours on both maps showing the well above average rainfall. In contrast, NW Britain was drier than average and also sunnier. A huge amount of sunshine in November for the NW Highlands as the heavy rain went elsewhere.

December 2019 and so Winter 2019 has started off with fog and frost, on a chilly quite settled note, a welcome change after all of November's rain and flooding. There will be a shift this week to more unsettled, blustery weather with rain from the Atlantic. Western Scotland will get clobbered by plenty of rain, so forget the dry and sunny autumn weather. There is a Met Office weather warning for heavy rain Thursday and Friday morning.

Met Offic yellow rain warning

The weekend looks blustery with bands of rain from the west. Not especially cold until the start of next week when a more northerly flow brings a return to the frosty nights.
