Low pressure is setting up stall over or near to the UK for the next few days, bringing with it a good rash of showers and thunderstorms. Today sees it moving up from the southwest, with a host of troughs and fronts wrapped around it. There's also another low up over northern Scotland, which'll slowly move away during the day.
Showery rain, with some thunderstorms and locally torrential downpours, will spread northeast across England and Wales as the day wears on. Scotland also has some showers which are moving east to west, with an increasingly dry picture during the second part of the day for eastern parts.
It's certainly a good day for keeping an eye on the weather radar. Nick Finnis has also issued a storm and convective forecast, which you can read here.
The north and east of the country will be the best place to see the warmest temperatures and most sunshine today, with highs of 21-24c. Elsewhere under cloudier skies, the high-teens are more likely. Winds will also be on the blustery side just about everywhere aside from the northern half of Scotland.
This evening and overnight, many of the showers across Scotland will die away, but they'll continue to affect England and Wales, perhaps touching into southern Scotland during the early hours.
Into tomorrow, the low pressure will move just offshore into the North Sea through northern England. But it'll be close enough to keep the showers and the gusty winds going. The showers will be most frequent in northern England and across Scotland, where some will be heavy and thundery once again.
The south of the country will fair best, with the showers fewer and further between, plenty of sunny spells and temperatures up into the low twenties.
By Thursday, our resident low will be a little further away to the east but still sat close enough by in the North Sea. Winds should be lighter inland by this point, but still quite stiff near to the coast. The showers will keep coming though, becoming heavy and thundery once again, but between them, there will at least be some sunshine on offer. Temperatures will widely climb up to 20-23c, so feel warmer than recent days under those lighter winds.
You'll probably be able to hazard a guess on the weather type for Friday. Yep, that's right - sunshine and showers. Temperatures will about be on a par with Thursday too. By Saturday, the original low will be out of the way, so the sunny spells could outweigh the showers for a time at least. More are likely to develop into the afternoon, though.
