Horse Racing: Cheltenham weather - A little more rain in a windy week
The weather has been making its presence felt for this Cheltenham Festival with heavy rain on the opening morning and uncertainty that Ladies Day would even get started due to the strength of the winds from Storm Gareth.
However, all was okay except for the spectators having to do battle against the elements, never ideal when you have a splendid outfit and hat. The going has changed from good/good to soft with the latest reports of soft/heavy in place even with a drying breeze overnight into Wednesday. And to think a month ago there was selective watering going on at Cheltenham after the warm, dry weather in February.
On both the hurdles and the chase course, the Going is now Soft, Good to Soft in places. Cheltenham Racecourse
Gusts of 40 to 50mph are still be reported inland for SW England on Wednesday afternoon. It is fine and dry with the showers now missing Cheltenham. The winds ease down slowly but for the rest of today's racing it will be windy and feel cold in the wind even with the bright sunshine.
There is more rain heading in from the west tonight but most of it won't reach Cheltenham. A few mms expected tonight.
A grey, damp start tomorrow with patchy rain early on, however, this frontal band should clear southwards in the morning. It will be blustery again with a brisk westerly wind. Although it will never feel that great in the wind, temperatures should reach 11C with a bit of brightness.
St Patrick’s Thursday – drier, still blustery Gold Cup Day- Still breezy, hoping the rain stays away
There will be another band of rain for Friday but it now looks like this will stay way to the north, so dry, mild conditions but still windy. In the W to SW wind, if the cloud breaks temperatures could reach 12C but if the cloud remains only 9C under gloomy skies.
