Valentines Weather: Love and Spring is in the air

The Daffodils will be up soon enough with plenty of mild, sunny weather to come during the remainder of this week.

Daffodils in February have become increasingly common since the late 1980s, so don't be surprised to see them in the next few days, as a large anticyclone centred over Germany continues to feed very mild southerly winds across the country. As a result, most parts see a taste of spring, while Northern Ireland and the North and West of Scotland closer to Atlantic systems, won't be quite so lucky.

Hihg pressure over Germany bringing mild air across the UK

Some rural parts of England and Wales are waking to a cold start with a frost; it was -3C first thing at Benson near Oxford. We also have patchy fog that'll linger for a few hours, before leaving a lovely spring-like day over most of England and Wales. While there'll be some cloud in the West and across northern England, to begin with, for most there'll be lots of sunshine. This'll make it feel particularly pleasant by the early afternoon when temperatures will reach 11 to 13C fairly generally, with 14 or 15C possible to the lee of the Welsh mountains, where you'll have shelter from a mostly light or moderate southerly breeze.

Although cloudy at first Northern Ireland, southern and some eastern parts of Scotland also see some 'spring-like' sunshine later, with similar temperatures to those across England and Wales. Across the North and West of Scotland however, cloud will give patchy mostly light rain or drizzle, with probably brighter skies moving in later South of the Trossachs. Top temperatures 14 or 15C along North facing shores of the Moray Firth but further West, 9 to 11C is more likely in a moderate or fresh southerly wind.

Temperatures on Thursday afternoon

Tyrone, Fermanagh, the Western Isles and the North of Scotland continue to see the cloud at times after dark, that'll give further patchy light rain or drizzle mostly over northern Scotland and the Northern Isles. Elsewhere it'll be a dry evening and night with clear spells especially over England, Wales and southern and eastern parts of Scotland. It'll turn cold enough in light winds or a frost and patchy fog to form again especially over rural parts of the East and South where temperatures will fall close to freezing in the coldest spots. In the West and far North, however, cloud at times and more of a southerly breeze will prevent temperatures from falling below 5 to 9C.

Friday will be similar in another lovely day over most of England, Wales and the South and East of Scotland with lots of sunshine once early fog patches have cleared. Later western parts may see more in the way of cloud, but this shouldn't prevent temperatures from reaching 11 to 14C. In favoured spots to the lee of the Welsh mountains and around the Moray Firth again, the thermometer could get as high as 15 or 16C in a light or moderate southerly breeze that'll tend to freshen a little through the day.

Sunshine for many again on Friday

Northern Ireland and the North and West of Scotland could also start fine with some sunshine, but cloud will increase bringing some rain later, chiefly to Northern Ireland and the Western Isles as Atlantic systems begin to move in. A fresh southerly wind could give strong gusts over exposed coasts and hills later, but despite this, temperatures should still manage to reach a mild 10 to 12C in most parts.

After dark Northern Ireland and mostly the North and West of Scotland see some rain, with cloud amounts tending to increase across the North and West of England later in the night to perhaps bring some patchy light rain or drizzle, as Atlantic systems make further progress into the country. Elsewhere though after a fine evening it'll remain dry with clear intervals in a somewhat fresher South West wind that'll make a frost less likely, with temperatures generally not falling below 3 to 8C.
