Low pressure near to Scotland is bringing some wind and rain to the north of Britain today. But the quiet calm weather will soon be back and will last into the New Year.
Pressure remains high over France and low further North, keeping it dry and quiet over central and southern parts. In the North winds off the Atlantic are making it breezy and more unsettled at times, with a cold front this morning over the North Midlands and North Wales weakening as it comes South.
Much of Scotland, Cumbria and parts of northern England have had some rain or showers overnight, but the depression responsible is now moving away into the North Sea. There'll be some showers for a while though, across the Northern Isles and the North and East of Scotland, these'll fade. You'll then join Northern Ireland in a day of variable cloud and sunny spells, with the best of the sunshine over East Scotland and to the East of the Pennines, before Northern Ireland sees cloud and some rain or drizzle moving in from the South by dusk.
A fresh or strong North West wind across the Northern Isles and North East Scotland at first will 'back' Westerly and decrease through the day. Top temperatures 9 to 11C but only 7 or 8C in the far North making it mild for late December in most parts.
The now very weak cold front is giving nothing more than a few mostly light showers across North Wales and the North Midlands and will soon fizzle out as it comes South, leaving brighter weather behind it. There'll be some sunshine, but cloud amounts will vary. Further South still it's mainly dry but rather cloudy and misty in places, particularly in the West. Through the day skies will brighten to let a little sunshine come through, mostly where you have shelter from a light or moderate West or South Westerly breeze, but most parts will probably keep a good deal of cloud. It'll be very mild though especially where you see a little sunshine, with top temperatures mostly in the range 9 to 12C.
There'll be clear spells after dark over Scotland and across the North and East of England, allow it to turn quite cold and misty in places for a while. A touch of ground frost is possible in some Scottish glens and across a few rural parts of eastern England, where the thermometer may fall close to 2C before temperatures rise later in the night as cloud moves in from the West.
Elsewhere any clear spells will soon disappear in a mostly cloudy night. The cloud will be thick enough to give patchy, mainly light rain or drizzle, with some heavier bursts of rain across Northern Ireland at first and the North and West of Scotland for a while. A moderate or fresh South Westerly wind will be light in the South, bringing very mild air to all but the far East by dawn, when temperatures will be in the range 5 to 10C.
Northern Scotland sees some rain at first on Sunday, with occasional patchy mostly light rain or drizzle in some other more western areas through the day. With pressure quite high across the country though particularly in the South, most places will be dry.
There'll be a good deal of grey, misty weather especially at first, but with skies gradually lifting through the morning. In the East and where you have shelter from a mostly light or moderate West or South West wind such as to lee of the Welsh mountains you should see the sun coming through to give a fine afternoon, but cloud amounts will continue to vary. It'll remain very mild, with top temperatures across the country mostly between 9 and 13C.
The far North and West of Scotland see further patchy mostly light rain or drizzle after dark, but most parts continue dry with variable amounts of cloud as pressure remains high over and to the South of the country. It becomes misty fairly generally, with patchy fog forming in rural areas mostly across the South and in sheltered eastern parts where skies clear for any length of time. Here there could also be a ground frost, but it's not expected to be an unduly cold night for late December, with lowest temperatures mostly in the range 3 to 7C.
High pressure remains dominant into the New Year keeping it dry in mostly light winds. Cloud amounts continue to vary, with breaks giving sunny spells. Where skies clear at night a slight frost and patchy fog will form that'll linger making some parts grey and colder in an otherwise fairly mild period.
