Dry in the Western Alps, colder and snowier further East

Last Week

In the immediate run up to Christmas, there was heavy precipitation across the Alps. Over 1 metre of snow in some locations, but generally the mildish weather meant this has largely been reserved for higher slopes, with more of a wintry mix lower down and at many resorts.

There has been some quiet weather over the Alps post Christmas, with some High Pressure close to or over Alps.

Current Synoptic pattern

There is High Pressure (1032mb) centred to the West of Iberia and a weak area of Low Pressure over Eastern Europe. Currently the mild Tropical Maritime airmass is circling around the High and feeding back over the Alps on its South Eastern flank.  850HPa temperatures ranging from +1c to +2c for NE Austria, +3 to +5c generally elsewhere, +7c to +10c for the France/Austria/Switzerland border.

Alps overview and temperatures

For the weekend and much of next week, Pressure will build over NW Europe (1036-1040mb). This should settle things down for much of the Alps, with France, Switzerland and Italy being completely dry. For Austria and other North Eastern parts, some moderate precipitation is expected for a time Sunday and possible around midweek for a time, currently projected for Thursday.

Temperatures are set to fall at times this week, as is often the case coldest towards the North East and mildest towards the South West.

850Hpa Temperatures

Rainfall / Snowfall

As mentioned earlier with High Pressure always close to the North West of the Alps, France, Switzerland and Italy are currently projected to be completely dry.
For Austria and other North Eastern parts, some moderate precipitation is expected for a time Sunday with snow above 1000-1200m.

Further precipitation is possible around midweek for a time, currently projected for Thursday with a projected snow level of 600-1000m.
Apart from this currently forecast to be dry however with an Easterly wind over the Alps, precipitation is sometimes under projected for Eastern parts of the Alps, so perhaps something to consider for Austria this coming week.

Snowfall is initially likely to be restricted to over 2000m for Sunday and Early hours Monday. perhaps lower further East over Austria.
Snow Forecast suggests over 50cm for some NE areas over the next 72 hours and also hours 72-144.

Summary

Dry quiet and settled for Western areas, sunny by day, frosty by night, so although no snow, those snow cannons will be working overtime.
Further east always a little colder, with a snow top-up at times, especially for the North East.
