If it's back to work, off to the sales or just still on holiday, the weather is quiet and settled. A bit of fog and frost but strong winds in the north by Saturday.

Back to work, off to the sales or just enjoying/enduring the holidays, the Christmas week weather continues to be quiet and settled.

High pressure lurks away to the south with weak weather fronts across the UK, mainly bringing a lot of cloud. There will still be frost for some and also fog.

At the edge of the high, across northern Scotland, there is a moderate westerly wind, but for much of the UK, winds are very light.

It will feel cool in southern Britain today with temperatures struggling around 7 or 8C, lower where the fog lingers. Elsewhere at 8 to 10C it’s not bad for later December.

Temperatures today (Thursday) afternoon

Over the next few days for most, there will be a lot of fair, dry weather, with bright spells, most likely in the east and some low cloud and dampness which is more likely in the west. Fog and frost continue to appear.

Early on Friday, a moderate SW wind picks up for Northern Ireland and Scotland as a frontal band heads in. This will bring more cloud and rain early in the day, but it moves quickly across to Shetland by lunchtime, leaving behind a rather grey murky picture The rest of Friday is fair and quiet as the high builds back in, before another frontal band grazes the far NW.

Low pressure to the north of Scotland on Saturday morning

Low pressure will move to the north of Scotland bringing windy weather Friday night into Saturday and some rain. A fresh SW wind will affect northern Britain and Northern Ireland, but there will be strong winds for western and northern Scotland.

Again, quiet and dry for much of England and Wales.

The strong winds continue into the afternoon for northern and eastern Scotland, also the NE England, quite a change from the mostly settled spell. It stays grey and damp in the west, including NW England and NW Wales. Eastern Britain could see brighter breaks

Those strong winds ease away across the North Sea and Saturday night sees the calm. Still conditions return and stay through Sunday.

If you are thinking about New Year’s Eve plans, at the moment it looks like the high will hold on, and it will be a fine, settled start to 2019.
