Merry Christmas! Green and grey are the colours this year

It's mainly cloudy and mild for Christmas day and that theme continues for much of Xmas week.

Issued: 25th December 2018 10:58

The weather hasn't done the best job at giving us a seasonal feel this year, but who cares, it's Christmas Day!

There was at least some frost this morning, with Aboyne in the Highlands dropping down to -7.5c, cloud in the west kept temperatures up here though, and all that will spill further east during the day. The cloud will be thick enough in some western parts, and especially over the hills to bring some patchy drizzle and murk at times, with the southeast of the country keeping the sunshine the longest (once any mist and fog has cleared).

Temperatures today will be mildest in the southwest, Wales and across much of Ireland (both north and south) reaching 10-13c typically. Elsewhere, it's a shade cooler at 6-11c.

The cloudy, sometimes misty and murky picture then continues through into Christmas night, with a few mist and fog patches again affecting southeastern Britain. Outbreaks of rain will also move down into Scotland from the northwest. With all the cloud, it'll be a milder night than last night with lows in some places barely dipping below double figures.

Boxing day stays mild and often cloudy, with further drizzly bits of rain in the west and more general rain feeding into the north and particularly northwest of Scotland at times accompanied by some blustery winds. Temperatures will widely peak at 10-12c.

The remainder of the week sees those northwest-southeast differences grow. Thursday follows along a similar path, with some bits of rain in the west and northwest, a fair amount of cloud and the best shot of any sunshine in eastern and southeastern parts.

Friday brings the likelihood of some wind and rain into the northwest, with the settled weather continuing further southeast, where frost and fog are possible early and late.

That's it for the weather update today, so all that's left to do is to wish you a very merry Christmas on behalf of the whole team here at Netweather.
