The weather will remain rather unsettled for the rest of the week and through the weekend, often windy with rain at times, but mild. A deep area of low pressure, named Storm Diana by the Portuguese for impacts to the Azores, will brush past Ireland and western Scotland today, bringing a wet and windy day, with gales or severe gales across northern and western areas. Another area of low pressure moving northeast, further south this time, will bring another spell of wet and windy weather overnight and tomorrow morning, before clearing to brighter but showery and still windy conditions. Friday is looking brighter and drier for many, but still windy, gales or severe gales in the north, with blustery showers across northwestern areas. Further spells of heavy rain across the south over the weekend, showers continuing across the north.

Today

For now, western coasts are experiencing 40-50mph gusts at the moment, but the wind is expected to become even stronger across the north and west through the day, gusting to 60-70mph. Increasingly windy elsewhere too, with gusts of 40-50mph likely inland, perhaps 60mph around coasts and over hills.

It will also be wet at times today, a band of rain clearing eastern areas first thing will be followed by a lot cloud with limited brightness across most areas through the day - bringing patchy outbreaks rain across many areas. The rain turning heavy and persistent across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, southern and western Scotland through the afternoon and into the evening, with up to 50mm (2 inches) of rain possible by the end of the evening.

Despite the wind and rain at times, turning milder across all areas after a chilly start in the north, temperatures at 7am already 14C across the southwest, this afternoon temperatures widely in double figures, reaching 14-15C in the south and west.

Tonight

Severe gales across western Scotland and Northern Isles for a time tonight, with gusts of 70mph or more around coasts and over hills, elsewhere windy with gales around coasts. Heavy rain across Scotland will quickly clear north by the early hours and becoming dry for a time for many, before further heavy rain sets in from the southwest across Wales, southern and western areas of England in the early hours.

Thursday

So, a wet and windy rush hour on Thursday across much of England and Wales, along with southern parts of Scotland, as another area of low pressure tracks northeast across southern Britain. Winds gusting to 50-60 mph around southern and western coasts possible. Morning rain clearing most places to brighter but still windy conditions in the afternoon but also blustery showers across western, central and southern areas, some of which will be heavy and perhaps thundery with hail. Temperatures reaching 10-13C generally.

Friday

As we end the week, a deep area of low pressure will move close to northern Scotland early Friday, bringing gales or severe gales for a time, otherwise a windy but brighter day, drier for many, but there will showers towards western and perhaps along southern coasts, heavy and frequent across the northwest. A little cooler, temperatures reaching 9-10C in the north, 11-12C in the south.

Weekend

Staying fairly mild across England and Wales over the weekend, chillier for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Less windy over the weekend, but heavy rain looks to move in from the west across Ireland, England and Wales on Saturday, clearing the east by the evening, brighter but showery Scotland. Then further rain looks to spread east across Ireland, then Wales, England and southern Scotland early on Sunday, before clearing to sunshine and showers into the afternoon.
