UK Weather: Mild But Increasingly Unsettled Trend, Perhaps Stormy Friday

Monday turned out rather warm in the south for early November, thanks to a gently southerly flow, with Otterbourne in Hampshire reaching a balmy 18.3C. Bonfire night turned out rather mild as a result but also dry for most, which was ideal for those outside enjoying firework displays and bonfires. It stays mild by day and night for the rest of the week, but it will turn increasingly windy toward the end of the week and most will see some rain passing through over the next couple of days, as a succession of frontal systems move through, though generally wettest in the west. Friday looks to turn wet and windy across all parts, as a deep depression arrives across the west.

Today

For now, it’s a cloudy and damp start in the west and north of Scotland, with patchy rain across parts of SW England, Wales, Northern Ireland, northern and western Scotland. As we head further east, a lot of dry weather if rather cloudy with some mist or fog patches, but also some early brightness for a lucky few, cloud drifting north is thick enough in places to produce the odd light shower.

Western areas will generally stay rather cloudy through today, with some patchy rain in places before a band of heavy thundery rain, currently over Ireland, edges east in across Cornwall, Devon, west Wales, Northern Ireland and across western Scotland this afternoon. Also becoming windy across western coasts and hills, with the southerly wind gusting to 40-50mph here. Eastern Scotland and eastern England staying mostly dry with increasing amounts of brightness or sunny spells after a cloudy start to the day, though the odd light shower can’t be ruled out.

With the breeze from the south, it will feel very mild by the afternoon, particularly in the east – where we see some sunshine. Highs of 15-18C for eastern England, 12-15C elsewhere.

Tonight

Rain across the west will make some progress eastwards tonight, though probably not reaching the far SE of England and coastal East Anglia until the end of the night. Clearer conditions but with showers following the rain across western Scotland and N. Ireland, though rain lingering Wales and western areas of England, where it will turn increasingly heavy from the south overnight – perhaps leading to some localised flooding.

Wednesday

A generally cloudy and damp day for many tomorrow. Heavy and persistent rain across SW England and Wales to start the day will linger through much of the day, perhaps bringing some disruption in places, the rain spreading northwest to affect eastern Ireland, N. Ireland, NW England and western Scotland too into the afternoon. Some heavy showers, perhaps even thundery, spreading north across south and southeast England. Areas most likely to stay dry will be eastern England from Lincolnshire northward. Not quite as mild, temperatures ranging between 11C in the north to 14C in the south. Increasingly windy everywhere, especially around coasts.

Thursday

A drier day on Thursday for eastern England, with some sunny spells developing too. Cloudier elsewhere, outbreaks of rain first thing across northern and western Scotland clearing, then further heavy rain spreading quickly northeast in across SW England, Wales, NW England and southern Scotland, before spreading across the rest of Scotland in the evening.

Friday

A spell of rain reaching eastern areas first thing on Friday, before clearing during the morning, then a drier and brighter interlude before a potentially deep area of low pressure moves over or close to the west of Ireland during the afternoon, bringing wet and windy conditions east across most areas through the afternoon.

Weekend

The rather unsettled and windy conditions continuing off the Atlantic across all areas during the weekend, with low pressure over or close to northern Britain, bringing further spells of rain or showers affecting all areas. Some drier and brighter interludes too.
