Weekend Weather: An Autumnal Jumble

Rain slowly moving southeast today and into tomorrow, before doing an about turn and moving north again later. Winds will be blustery today too, especially across northern Britain.

Issued: 3rd November 2018 09:08

After that lovely sunshine of yesterday, you can expect more of the same across parts of the Midlands, East and South East today. Over Northern Ireland and Scotland, however, it's a different story, with a front giving outbreaks of rain some heavy. Remaining parts of England and Wales will see cloud, with patchy rain moving into North West England, the North and West of Wales and Cornwall later.

We have low pressure to the North West containing the remnants of ex-hurricane Oscar and high pressure to the East, that's pumping a mild but moist southerly airflow across most parts. It's a chilly start towards the South East though with a touch of frost first thing over some rural parts of Kent, but the sunshine coupled with a freshening southerly wind will soon lift temperatures. The wind will be a major player today over Scotland, Northern Ireland and across the North and West where gale or severe gales are likely, with gusts of 60mph expected over exposed coasts and hills.

Windy across northern Britain today

It'll be mild by the afternoon everywhere though, with top temperatures 11 to 14C locally 15 or 16C over some sheltered parts of East Scotland should you see brighter intervals.

Northern Ireland sees skies clearing from the West through the afternoon, this spreading to much of Scotland overnight. East Scotland then becomes mainly dry, while Highland and Northern Ireland, in particular, see a scattering of blustery showers. The southerly wind however although still fresh with gales in the West, will begin to decrease. Across Lothian and The Borders, northern England, Wales, much of the Midlands and in the West it'll be mostly cloudy with patchy rain that may turn heavier later in the night towards the South West.

Rain moving southeast this evening

Meanwhile, East Anglia and the South East remain fine with clear intervals, where you have the best chance of it staying dry for those evening firework parties. It may turn a little chilly again over Kent and Essex after dark and also in some glens of East Scotland later, but generally, it'll be a mild, frost-free night, with lowest temperatures 5 to 10C.

Sunday sees a slow-moving front across central parts that'll give grey, misty weather and sporadic bursts of rain over the South West, Wales, much of the Midlands, northern England and perhaps The Borders. Some of the rain could be heavy mostly in the South, this possibly spreading to Antrim and Down later. The East Midlands, East Anglia and the South East should continue to stay dry, but with more in the way of cloud. Remaining parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and perhaps Cumbria see some sunshine, although still with a scattering of showers across Highland. Although still fresh over West Scotland, a southerly or South to South West wind will be lighter generally in a mild day, with temperatures mostly between 10 and 13C by the afternoon.

The North and West of Scotland see clear spells after dark, before much of Scotland turns cloudy and misty with patchy light rain or drizzle, as that front returns northwestwards again. Northern Ireland also sees some rain, with England and Wales turning misty generally. Here too patchy mostly light rain or drizzle is likely, while some eastern areas see clear intervals for a while. This could encourage patchy fog to develop, some of it perhaps locally dense by morning. It's not expected to be a particularly cold night though in a lighter South or South Easterly breeze, with lowest temperatures mostly in the range 5 to 9C.

Looking further into next week, I see conditions more typical of November with a fair amount of dull, dreary, misty weather, but there'll also be a few sunny or clear intervals. It'll be mild on the whole but mixed, with occasional rain or showers, particularly in the West. The East will tend to be drier, but here too there'll be showers particularly later in the week, so take a brolly just in case.
