This weekend: Cold North wind, will it bring snow?

It will feel much colder this weekend in an Arctic northerly flow, but what about the chance of snow?

It is going to feel very cold tomorrow, Friday 26th Oct and particularly on Saturday in a fresh to strong north wind. There will be some snow brought down on this Arctic flow, but it won't be worth reaching for the sledge just yet. we aren't far off November now but there's plenty of time for winter proper to come.

It will feel bitterly cold on Saturday, in strong north winds from the Arctic.

The ground still has some warmth in it. Dark ploughed fields and tarmac roads still take in the sun's rays and if you've managed to find a sheltered spot this week, you'll know that there is still a bit of power in the sunshine, even if it is fading. Come January, the earth is much colder, and any wintry flurries stand more chance of settling then. Over the next few weeks, if there are any more wintry flurries it is more likely that you'd see snowflakes linger a short while on the grass,

The flow will bring showers; a mixture of rain, hail (and thunder) sleet and over the higher ground snow. Sea surface temperatures at the moment aren't that low, compared to the cold air moving down from the Arctic although I'm not overly recommending a dip in the North Sea. The air will be unstable, cold above the relatively warmer sea and overturning takes place, cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds pop up and we get lively showers. Keep an eye on the Radar to see their progress.

This head in with the wind, so a NW or N wind on Friday and more of a Northerly on Saturday. Northern Scotland gets clobbered by lots of showers and other fringe areas also see showers. Inland, many parts stay dry and bright. This wishbone effect happens a lot in a northerly flow around the UK. The air will be colder over the higher ground and so the showers will turn to sleet or snow over the hills and mountains. There could be hail, lighting and thunder for other areas, around the coasts. And for a time on Friday evening and overnight into early Saturday there could be sleet and snow to lower levels for northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, with a risk of ice.  Will it snow ?
