Week Ahead: Sun Setting On The Heatwave As Cooler Weather Spreads Southeast

More heat to come in southern and central regions, but a breakdown is on the way over the next few days.

Issued: 5th August 2018 09:22

The heatwave in central, southern and eastern parts is beginning to breakdown, as somewhat cooler much fresher Atlantic air works its way slowly from the West over the next few days. It'll also turn more unsettled and breezier especially in the North, with perhaps a few sharp showers towards the South East for a time as the heatwave comes to an end. For today though we have a ridge of high pressure across the country that'll give another fine, dry day over England and Wales.

There's a lot of cloud across much of Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia at the moment, but this'll break through the morning. Any remaining mist or fog patches will also soon clear to leave sunny spells, and while there'll continue to be patchy cloud, this shouldn't spoil an agreeable day too much. After some rain around the Moray Firth at first, Scotland and Northern Ireland will also be mainly dry but with more cloud here. This'll increase more generally from the West across Northern Ireland through the afternoon, with bursts of rain moving into the province later. Highland and the Western Isles may also see patchy rain, while Orkney and Shetland remain dull and misty with occasional rain or drizzle.

Winds generally will be light, but with a South Westerly breeze across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here top temperatures will be mostly in the range 15 to 18C, with 19 to 22C more likely towards Lothian and The Borders where it'll be brighter and sunnier for a while. Across England and Wales though it'll become very warm or hot by the afternoon, with temperatures reaching 28 or 29C in the South East but 24 to 27C more generally.

Temperatures this afternoon

It'll be another one of those lovely warm summery evenings over most of England and Wales, followed by a dry night with clear spells. Light winds allow a few mist or fog patches to form again in rural areas towards morning, with Cumbria and the far North of England turning cloudy later, with patchy rain. The East and South of Scotland will be dry into the evening, but much of Scotland sees some rain moving in overnight. Northern Ireland is wet and misty with some hill and fog, with Tyrone and Fermanagh perhaps seeing a change to more broken skies by morning.

Winds'll remain light over most of England and Wales, with a generally light or moderate South or South Westerly breeze over Scotland and Northern Ireland. It'll be a very mild, somewhat humid night across central and southern parts of England, with minimum temperatures across the country mostly between 12 and 17C.

Monday remains fine from the Midlands southward, where sunny spells lead to yet another hot afternoon. Temperatures could get as high as 31 or 32C (90F) over parts of the South East, although 26 to 29C will be a more general maximum.

Temperatures on Monday

Later in the day Wales and the Midlands turn more cloudy, but it should stay dry in a light West or South Westerly breeze, with remaining parts of England and South East Scotland having cloud and patchy rain. Northern Ireland sees rain clearing to sunny spells and a few showers these mostly in the North and West, this spreading to the North and West of Scotland through the day. Winds here will be moderate or fresh South Westerly, with top temperatures 15 to 19C.

The evening could see a few sharp showers across East Anglia and South East perhaps with thunder. There'll also be showers over other parts of England and Wales before cooler, fresher conditions with clearing skies move into Cumbria later in the night. Across Scotland and Northern Ireland there'll be clear spells, with just a few showers in the North and West. Here it could turn a little chilly in some rural areas in lighter breezes, with lowest temperatures 8 to 12C. Towards East Anglia and the South East, however, it'll remain humid, where temperatures may fall no lower than 16 to 18C, with North West England and the West of Wales probably seeing a more comfortable 12 to 14C by morning.
